Scots to host Northern Ireland

Mon 24 Mar, 04:30 PM

Scotland will face Northern Ireland in a friendly match at Hampden on August 20, with Irish boss Nigel Worthington relishing the fixture.Worthington believes the 'Battle of Britain' match against the Scots will be the perfect preparation for World Cup qualifiers later in the year.

"I'm very happy with this game against Scotland and the timing is perfect," Worthington said.

"There were discussions about playing the game in May but that is when players like to switch off and spend time with their families and take a breather.

"This way it will be after pre-season when the lads will be really sharp and I think both countries will benefit from it.

"It will be a British Championship-type game and that will mean there is a big competitiveness to it also.

"I can't think of a better way to warm up for the World Cup qualifiers."
