Mansfield's League Two relegation worries increased significantly after a woeful performance in a 2-0 defeat at Bury on Monday. The Gigg Lane hosts went ahead with barely 10 minutes played as Elliott Bennett sent over a free-kick from the right and skipper Paul Scott jumped highest to head home.
The struggling visitors offered precious little in reply, and almost went two behind when Alex-John Baptiste came close to slicing Brian Barry-Murphy's free-kick into his own net.
But the Shakers were not to be denied a second and doubled their lead after 37 minutes.
Bennett neatly turned the ball into Adam Rooney's path, and the on-loan Stoke striker smashed home a crisp low shot past goalkeeper Jason White from 15 yards.
Stephen Dawson's low drive struck the base of a post three minutes into the second half as Mansfield looked for a way back into the game, while Scott fired narrowly wide from 20 yards at the other end.
