The European Rally Champion of 2007, Simon Jean-Joseph, will continue his collaboration with Franch manufacturer Citroën this year. The man from Martinique will enter a C2-R2 Max in eight European rounds this season.

Jean-Joseph took time out a few days ago, amid preparations for his 2008 programme, to present the C2-R2 Max during a ceremony near Versailles.

The car was designed and developed with the FIA's new Group R regulations in mind, explained Jean-François Liénéré, Director of Ctroën Sport's Client Competition Programme: "We found it necessary to expand the range of our competition vehicles."

"With the commercial success of our existing rally models (C2 Super 1600 and C2-R2), we realised that we could also offer an intermediate vehicle, which can fit within a reasonable budget yet offer higher performances than the C2-R2. The C2-R2 Max corresponds to those requirements," he said.

Modifications and additions brought to the car include a more powerful engine, competitive suspension system, reinforced braking, adjustable rear drive and hydraulic steering system.

"The exterior look of the car is basically the same; only the front and back are slightly wider," added Alexis Avril, who looks over the technical aspects. "Everything is under the bonnet with a 1599cm3 capacity and an engine with 190 horsepower."

Last year, the C2-R2 proved its worth in the FIA Junior Championship and national European championships. With these improvements, the C2-R2 Max should allow drivers to fight for victory in the R2 class and even enter into battle with contenders within higher categories.

Citroën chose Simon Jean-Joseph, 2007 European Rally Champion aboard a C2 Super 1600, to promote the new car on selected European events.

"Simon possesses great rally experience, and thanks to his qualities as a driver, will be a very good ambassador for the marque and the C2-R2 Max across Europe," said Olivier Quesnel, Citroën Sport Director.
