David James sees being involved in the England squad as a "personal triumph".
The Portsmouth keeper is expected to start Wednesday's friendly against France and playing the full 90 minutes of Fabio Capello's debut game against Switzerland.
The 37-year-old is refusing to take his spot in the starting XI for granted and insists he is just happy to be in the squad with competition for the goalkeeper's shirt so fierce.
"I've said all along - it is a personal triumph to still be involved," James told Sky Sports News.
"I don't like using age as a factor but it is there and it is relevant.
"To be still involved with so many decent English goalkeepers about it is good.
"The strength in depth is definitely there.
"I feel part of the squad, part of the team, I don't know what will happen
because the team hasn't been announced.
"If it is anything like last time it (the team) will not be given to us until 10 minutes before we get on the bus."
James also backed David Beckham in his bid to win his 100th cap.
Beckham is in line to become the fifth English player to reach the century after he was left out the Switzerland win.
James believes Beckham is still good enough to warrant his place in the England squad despite fears his move to MLS could affect his form and fitness.
"If things had been right he should have made his 100th cap before now.
"He is a world-class player, today in training he demonstrated he has not lost
anything.
"I consider it an opportunity for me to stake a claim for participation for
2010. I think David Beckham is the same - he is not just here for his 100th
cap.
"He is a world-class footballer. He deserves to be part of the England set up.
It's a pleasure to play with him."
