Transfers - Gossip Shop: Bayern covet McGeady

Eurosport - Tue, 24 Mar 09:06:00 2009

Celtic winger Aiden McGeady could be set for a big-money move to Bayern Munich.

Reports in Scotland claim that the inevitable move of the Irish flyer to one of Europe's top leagues will materialise in the summer.

The Scottish Daily Mail pointed to Bayern as his most likely destination, while The Scottish Sun reckons that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been eyeing him.

Both would make some sort of sense.

Bayern currently have Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger operating on the flanks but Ribery is a target for Barcelona and the rest, while ageing Brazilian lefty Ze Roberto is more comfortable in the middle of the park these days.

Spurs use playmaker Luka Modric on McGeady's preferred wing but he is also more centrally minded, while other wide midfielders Aaron Lennon and David Bentley have much more joy on the right.

Either way, Ireland coach Giovanni Trappatoni would rather he quit the SPL sooner rather than later. Monkey tennis, I tell you.

Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis could move to Everton or Bolton even if the South Coast club retain their place in the Premier League.

The former Fulham and Tottenham man's contract expires in the summer but, oddly, Pompey only offered him a new deal in March and the player is exercising his right to let it run down.

"Sean has been offered an improved three-year contract," executive chairman Peter Storrie said in the Daily Mirror. "But I think he wants to keep his options open until the end of the season."

One man who will not be going anywhere is Stiliyan Petrov, who is set to sign a three-year extension to an Aston Villa deal that expires in 2010.

With Robbie Fowler leading the way at North Queensland Fury, more English players could see out the twilight of their careers in Australia.

Wolves captain Jody Craddock is being targeted by Perth Glory as he ponders whether his 33-year-old legs would be able to handle the Premier League in the likely event of their promotion.

The same club are looking at Birmingham's Kevin Phillips, whose decision to leave West Brom on promotion looked more like an acceptance that he could no longer cut it in the top flight than the given reason of a longer contract.

Struggling Newcastle have taken MFK Kosice prospect Lubomir Korijkov on trial.

The 16-year-old Slovakia youth international will spend a week at St James' Park after impressing Dennis Wise and co.

  3. point 54, so Larrson was way past his prime when he played for Celtic? and still scored bags of goals in the Scottish league, well you may be right, but he then went to Barcelona and won the European Cup, guess who against? Arsenal, get it up ye. Can i just add that man utd have never beaten Celtic at Parkhead in the champions league, and blackburn and liverpool took a helluva doing last time they tried it on, so get it up ye again and again.

  4. What's sooo good about the EPL? I reckon if they're looking for a new sponsor, they could shortlist MOGADON, PROZAC, OR DULUX FOR IT! Dunno if anybody read the reports that childhood suicide is on the increase in England, according to CHILDLINE. Must be because their dad's insist they go watch English football!

  10. 55 - you just stick with the lager, stoopid! And maybe QPR were playing a pre-season friendly, but CELTIC AND RANGERS play those games in the same way as a cup game / league game! That is why they are constantly invited by ENGLISH teams to play in testimonials, friendlies, etc!

  11. Comment 54, Larsson left the S.P.L. when he was 32, which is not exactly 'mid 30's' in anyones book.

He also went on to win a Champions league medal. Ask Terry Henry what he thought of Larsson after that final.

  12. number 54 you talk some p***. Larsson was in his thirties whilst banging goals in the premership!! The league with 4 teams with a chance but man u seem to win most. This sky's @#$% league 4 teams and lots of scandalously rich! yet surprisingly mediocre given their financial standing????

  16. Hahaha you sweat Sock (Jocks) are so full of it who was the last team to will the Scottish League apart from Rangers and Celtic? Ensuring you get in the Champions League every Year only to be Knocked out by some team no-ones ever heard of. If you could do well in the European cup you would have the extra cash to buy decent players, but then again do you think any world class player would want to play in the Scottish League with the Exception on Larrson who was way past his prime and in his mid 30s and still scored bags of goals says it all.
