Preston chairman Derek Shaw insists the club will back manager Alan Irvine as he seeks to bolster his squad during the summer.North End go into the final two games of the season having staved off the threat of relegation from the Championship.

While lavish in his praise of Irvine's achievements since arriving at the club in November, Shaw accepts more reinforcements will be needed at Deepdale if the club are to progress further next season.

Shaw said: "Alan will have a look at what he wants to do over the summer months and like every manager we have had here, we will back him in every way possible that we can to help him achieve his goals.

"With the squad and players that we have got here and our Championship record in recent years there's no reason why we shouldn't be fighting at the top end of the table."
