Rovers to host big friendlies

Thu 24 Apr, 01:30 PM

Bristol Rovers' Memorial Stadium will stage two "high profile" pre-season friendlies before redevelopment work begins in the summer. It was widely anticipated that Saturday's visit of Brighton would be the final game to be played at the ground before its £35million-plus face lift.

A club statement read: "Redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium is due to begin in the summer but the club plan to host a couple of high-profile pre-season friendly games before we move.

"It would be very difficult to host a big summer game at a temporary home, so it makes sense to use the facilities at the Memorial Stadium while they still exist.

"The regeneration of the stadium is progressing according to plan, and it is hoped that the final friendly will be a suitable way to officially mark the end of our time at the Memorial Stadium in its present form."

Rovers plan to ground share while the work is being carried out on the Memorial Stadium. West country clubs Cheltenham, Swindon and Yeovil are possible options and the club are expected to make an announcement regarding the matter at their Annual General Meeting on April 28.
