Fantasy F1: On the grid!

Eurosport - Thu, 24 Apr 14:58:00 2008

Fantasy Formula One heads into the European leg of the 2008 season - and here's your chance to find out who should be in your team for the Spanish Grand Prix at Montmelo.

2007 Circuit de Catalunya Montmelo Barcelona - 0

HOW IT WORKS

- You choose three drivers for each race - one from Group A and two from Group B - plus a team.

- The top eight finishers in the race receive 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 fantasy point respectively, plus there is a bonus point for any driver leading at any point during the race and another for completing the entire race.

- The top three drivers in qualifying will earn 3, 2 and 1 point respectively, meaning each driver can receive a maximum of 15 fantasy points during each race and each team can earn a maximum of 27 fantasy points per race.

- Each driver and constructor can be an active member of your team in no more than four races.

This means with 18 races scheduled you will have to use at least five of the elite seven Group A drivers at some point in the season and also at least nine of the 15 Group B drivers.

It also means that you have to pick at least five of the 11 teams. Herein lies the great dilemma of the game - who should I pick for each race?

Shall I pick all the big names early on to get to the top of the leaderboard? Which teams perform well on which tracks? And which teams will improve as the season progresses?

The deadline to create a team for each race is 8am local time on the day of qualifying which means you must have your entries in by 1.30am on Saturday morning.

TEAMS

Ferrari are the team everyone is looking to catch at the moment so common sense dictates that you should go with them. They had pole and the race winner in 2007 at Montmelo and have also won five of the last seven races at the circuit.

If you enjoy going against the grain, you can find hope in the knowledge that all the top teams are to introduce innovations in Catalonia and it will be difficult to predict how they will work out in race conditions.

It is hard to imagine that McLaren are going to remain shy of the standards set by BMW Sauber over the whole season, so by all means have a gamble on them coming good - they had three consecutive wins with Mika Hakkinen before Ferrari's dominance with Michael Schumacher and current Ferrari hero Raikkonen won with the Woking-based team in 2005.

BMW are looking good this season though, surprising everyone by outperforming McLaren, so if you decide to save your Scuderia pick they are the soundest bet.

DRIVERS

Felipe Massa could be the man again, having silenced the doubters with a sensational win from the front row last time out. If you want more convincing that the Brazilian is the one to go with, witness his pole, victory and fastest lap in Barcelona last season.

Finn Raikkonen suffered a suspension problem at this race in 2007 but the car seems more reliable now than a year ago. The question of whether he will take a back seat to team-mate Massa again after Bahrain - where he finished second - will be one of the talking points of the weekend.

McLaren ace Lewis Hamilton came from fourth on the grid on his Montmelo debut to pass then team-mate Fernando Alonso and end in second, but all was not well with the youngster at Sakhir in the third round as he lost top spot in the drivers' standings. Alonso triumphantly won his home grand prix in 2006 with Renault and the team reckon they have sorted out some issues after a poor start to the 2008 campaign, but he would be a gamble.

In the 'B' group Toyota's Jarno Trulli again finished highest, so you could do worse than go with him - but if you have already used some picks on the Italian save him and go with Mark Webber of Red Bull, who was right on his tail at the end.

Nico Rosberg of Williams also looked better while Trulli's team-mate Timo Glock, GP2 champion last season, is finding his feet in the big boys' paddock.
