La Liga - Pepe gets 10-match ban

Eurosport - Fri, 24 Apr 22:53:00 2009

Real Madrid defender Pepe has been banned for 10 matches following his red card and extraordinary loss of control against Getafe in this week's 3-2 Liga win at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese international will miss Real's remaining six games of the season, including next week's home match against leaders Barcelona, after the ruling by the disciplinary committee of the Spanish FA.

With the scores level at 2-2 and three minutes left in Tuesday's clash at the Bernabeu, Pepe pushed Getafe's Francisco Casquero and the referee awarded a penalty.

He then kicked Casquero on the ground and a second swipe saw him rake his studs over the midfielder's back. In the ensuing melee he struck another Getafe player, Juan Albin, in the face.

He was shown a straight red card, having already picked up a yellow earlier in the match, and said "You are all sons of whores" to the fourth official as he left the pitch.

He also broke the rules by coming back on to celebrate Gonzalo Higuain's winner with his team mates.

Alfredo Florez, RFEF disciplinary committee president, said on Spanish radio that Pepe had been banned for one game for the red card, eight games for aggression towards opponents and one more match for his offensive remarks.

Pepe apologised for his actions and said he was not a violent player, but his behaviour has been widely condemned.

Getafe president Angel Torres was quoted as saying Real should tear up the player's contract.

"Pepe's attitude was unforgiveable," he said in Marca. "The behaviour we witnessed on Tuesday is bound to encourage violence among children."

Real said on their website the committee had also decided to rescind a yellow card shown to forward Higuain for diving in the penalty area, meaning the Argentine can play in Sunday's match at third-placed Sevilla.

  6. So, of the 10 match ban, only 8 were for the violence. Got off lightly in my opinion. Should be a whole season for something like that. Real should have taken action straight away, but then that's what Real are like.

  7. this 'foul' was basically GBH. raking his studs along his leg, and then back and throwing a punch at a completely innocent player?
these kinda incidents make me more disenchanted with football everytime they happen. the sublime parts of the game are being eclipsed by the scum more and more

  8. Excellent news, although it should be way more. And Marcelo should be banned also. I'm not a fan of Angel Torres, Getafe's president, but he said today that Real should have been the first ones to take action against Pepe and that Real are losing a lot of credibility these days. I couldn't agree more. For a good while now, Real Madrid think that they can do what they want when they want.

  9. Well-deserved sanction and may it serve a lesson to all those who confuse between football and kickboxing. If however I was Getafe's coach, I would suspend Casquero for not punishing that incident with a good penalty. He sold the match to madrid! Both players are just losers!

  11. It's a joke he only got 10 games. He should of received at least 20 games plus a huge fine and have him attend a course on how to control your temper. Read Madrid should also suspend him on top of the 10 games. Pepe is a disgrace for what he did.

  13. juan, why did you want him to do. cut through his skin with his studs? would that satisfy you?
if big clubs don't understand what the Respect and Fair Play campaigns are about, than what the hell do we have them for? just give the refs guns the players knives, and let's have a new sport...hockball! they can punch themselves to death.

  17. real madrid should clean themselves from such players if they want to regain the respect that they have lost in the past 3 years. Players like him are a disgrace to the sport, and do no deserve to play for big clubs.

From go, on Fri 24 Apr 5:27PM
  18. 10 matches ban is not enough. He has to be sent into court! What if the same thing would happened in a street fight? Pepe didnt act like a football player in that move..
