Ali Carter and Joe Perry are all square at 4-4 after an uninspiring opening session to their World Championship second round match at the Crucible.

Carter started the match, a repeat of the 2008 semi-final which Carter won, with a fine 88 but then Perry went in front as breaks of 50 in successive frames helped him take the early advantage.

Carter levelled by edging a tight fourth frame but then Perry returned after the mid-session interval with a 56 effort helping to put him back in front.

A 72 from Carter made it 3-3 and then the two players shared a scrappy two frames to end the session with Perry taking the former and Carter the latter.
