Australian Simon Gerrans of Cervelo sprinted clear on the brutal final 2km climb to claim victory in the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Campi Bisenzio to Bologna.
Russian Denis Menchov of Rabobank maintained his overall lead with a 34 second advantage over 2007 winner Danilo Di Luca.
With a short but devilish final climb it was never likely that the overall contenders would make significant inroads into each other's times but there was enough of a sting in the stage's tail that both Levi Leipheimer and Ivan Basso lost three seconds on their main rivals.
Apart from that late dash, which saw the group of the pink jersey wearer come in a minute behind Gerrans, this was a fairly tranquil day for the overall race contenders.
Instead the major drama and action came in the breakaway group.
With five climbs the stage always looked suitable to a breakaway and a dozen riders escaped early on.
They stretched out a lead of around four minutes 30 seconds at one point but crucially kept their lead at around two minute by the time they reached the final climb.
That gave the leaders enough of a gap to the peloton to ensure that one of them would claim the victory.
ISD's Andriy Grivko was the first to have a go but he came to a virtual stop on the final climb and Gerrans swept past him with Kenyan-born Briton Chris Froome in tow.
They looked to be pushing clear together until Froome, who appeared to be pushing a gear that was too high, hit the wall on a climb that had sections with gradients of 16-20 percent.
Gerrans then rode off into the distance to win by 12 seconds from Italian Rubens Bertaglioti of Diquigiovanni. Lampre's Francesco Gavazzi was third, 18 seconds behind the stage winner.
When the rapidly dwindling peloton arrived it was led by Italian Franco Pellizotti of the Liquigas team.
And it was his burst that saw team-mate Basso, seventh overall, and third-placed Leipheimer of Astana lose a few seconds.
Pellizotti remains fourth with Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre fifth.

You all have short memories, Astana with Levi AND Horner as well as Garzelli, Pellizotti and Michael Rogers were on the attack just last week. By the way, you don't need to attack to win, just dominate, remember Big Mig. Brilliant tactics by Rabobank to neutralize Di Luca's chances of time bonus by letting the big break make it to the finish. Menchov looks like the winner but it's still a long way to Rome, he could still have one bad day.
Fair point, but Robbie McEwen has made it to Paris on most if not all his starts! Cav pulled out halfway last year & not due to injury - a pattern is emerging...
You can tell its Ashes Year when AUS vs ENG sledging makes its way to cycling threads!
I agree Chris in regards to Cadel, but in fairness to Cavendish, he's kinda following the Robbie McEwan template for success at the tour by pulling out of the Giro after 10 days to 2 weeks.
At least Cadel Evans finishes tours unlike Cavendish hit and run approach. With a very weak team to support him Evans must stay with the leaders and attack IF the opportunity is there and he feels he can. I just dont get how many question Evans when he plays the only card he has - hang in, do enough to be around the mark and hope his time trial advantage-( the only advantage he has) can make the difference.
menchov will win this giro , lads :)
I agree (sadly) - Levi and Astana have been gutless.
Being strong in the TT means he is like a football team hanging on for penalties.
Not to worry - in TDF he will assume his natural role of super-dom/donkey for Contador.
BUT he still has some way to go before he lifts the Cadel trophy (which is a miniature Mavic wheel with a Dyson attached to it)
The Cadel bashing can stop, cos he has been replaced, presenting everyone's new favourite target for derision, unrealistic expectations and criticism, Levi Leipheimer!! I would add his comment in response to Di Luca saying/goading about him 'never having attacked in a race ever' , 'if i'm still 6 seconds behind Di Luca by Rome, i wont need to attack'. If he should attack and doesnt, i think when he gets back to the team bus Lance will express everyone's sentiments in no uncertain terms.
Will we ever see Leipheimer attack? Only time I`ve ever seen him do that was in the TD California - he`s the most boring cyclist ever!
What about Deignan? 5th place for the young Irish man on a tough stage...well done!!!
Onya Gerro, Great guts once again. when the going gets tough the Australians get going. Funny his 2 stage wins from grand tours were both in Italy but in two different races!
Gerrans is a quality Aussie product. Much more refreshing to watch an Aussie on the attack than following wheels.
Go you good thing Gerrans!!!! Awesome victory, well done, de ja vu all over again, similar time of the race, similar stage to Pratonevoso last year, as soon as i saw his name is the break, i thought he might do it, class act.
Was a shame only LPR had the b@lls to have a go today.
If Astana, Liquigas and co. had helped with the chase we could have had a proper fight at the end.
Di Luca, il Giro e`tuo!!!!!
Cav's back at home eating his chips no doubt.resting up before dauphine libere and le tour...lol. super effort and win for simon gerrans, well done, shame froome lost it on the really steep part, he was zig-zagging up trying to find the right gear i saw..excellent result tho'..menchov will show his true form tomorrow and we'll see if he really deserves the maglia rosa, vai vai vai giro d'talia!!
Com'on Froome!!!
Great ride by Froome, he'll get his win soon
Well i hope Leiphemer have more help on 16º stage, ans i hope astana guys are saving for those hard days, i believe they gonna make they moove in the real mountain stages. Menchov looks strong will be very dificult to beat even without a team i dont think he's going to be easy. Basso is not stronger as i thouhgt, Pelizzoti is in a better shape that's for sure
