United youngsters prove worth as Tigers celebrate

Sun 24 May, 06:29 PM

Hull escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth despite slumping to a 1-0 defeat against an under-strength Manchester United.

Darron Gibson fired the only goal of a tense Premier League encounter at the KC Stadium with a stunning strike midway through the first half.

Yet with Newcastle losing at Aston Villa, the Tigers just managed to limp over the line to safety with 35 points.

United made 10 changes as Sir Alex Ferguson rested his biggest names ahead of the Champions League final on Wednesday but the final score meant there could be no complaints from any of Hull's rivals.

The champions' starting XI had an average age of just 23, a figure boosted by the return of veteran club captain Gary Neville, 34.

England defender Rio Ferdinand, hoping to prove his fitness to face Barcelona in Rome after a calf injury, failed to make it.

  3. To all the brain-dead scousers, it is the points total at the end of the season that determines the League Champions. This season, United have won it by FOUR CLEAR POINTS. I remember that in the 1969-1970 Season, United beat Liverpool 1.0 at Old Trafford and in the same season, I had the privilege, whilst standing in The Kop, of watching BEST, LAW, CHARLTON AND COMPANY destroy the scousers 4.1. Unfortunately, United ended the season without any trophies. @#$% happens. Accept it and move on you sad losers.

  5. I'm so glad the youngsters won yesterday as it shut up all the pundits, arm chair experts and rafa's of this country. They were waiting to pounce if they lost. I cant believe all the hype. Its the same with the bitter and twisted LFC fans on here, they keep banging on about doing the double over Utd and about the 4-1 win. Yes, that all well and good, and good effort, you played well. However it doesnt detract from the fact of what Utd has won already this season and have got to the final of the Champions League. Also the vehement hatred is quite sad, i bet all the LFC fans will be wanting Barca to win instead of a fellow English team. If Utd weren't in the final i would still cheer on an English team whoever they were. It's attitudes like that which gives English football such a bad name abroad.

  6. John. Not agreed. That was Fergie tactics 5+ years ago. The old Scot has proved all wrong yet again and learned on past mistakes. He knows his team can win. Only if they get to dominate midfield, and theres the ironic bit about Fletcher. From the midfield comes their, when capable, inventive football, sexy enough to beat the incredible Barcelona.
I'm dreaming of a excellent final.

  7. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

just remember united fans the way that porto played you off the park at old trafford but didnt take their chances if barca create just a quarter of those chances they will hammer united so i predict fergie will play a really defensive game and try to win 1-0. john

  10. As it turned out Newcastle did not need United to send them down. They were quite capable of doing so themselves. They can't even have the consolation of taking United to the courts for a wishful windfall hahaha. Sorry Alan still has Ferguson Jr to battle with in the championship.
