Ivan Basso of Liquigas took victory on Stage 15 of the Giro d'Italia after a gruelling mountain climb in northern Italy to move to within touching distance of the pink jersey.
The Italian rider showed immense grit on a tortuous climb up the infamous Monte Zoncolan to pull away from Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) at the end of the 218 kilometre stage.
Michele Scarponi (Diquigiovanni-Androni) closed the gap on Evans in the closing stages but had to settle for third while Damiano Cunego (Lampre) came in fourth, 1min 58secs behind Basso.
Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana) finished fifth, while Carlos Sastre (Cervelo TestTeam) completed an amazing recovery to come from dead last to finish in sixth.
Stage 14 winner Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) and Marco Pinotti (HTC-Colombia) completed the top eight.
Victory for Basso saw him move to within three-and-a-half minutes of overall leader David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne), who will keep the pink jersey for 48 hours. Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) remains second in the GC, having been toppled from top spot on Saturday's Stage 14.
Monday is a rest day, allowing those riders who completed the ascent up the Zoncolan time to recharge their batteries before Tuesday's individual 12.9km time trial between San Vigilio di Marebbe and Plan de Corones.
The 15th stage of this year's Giro began in Mestres in unassuming enough fashion before a group consisting of Nico Sijmens (Cofidis), Jackson Rodriguez (Androni Giocatolli), Jerome Pineau and Francesco Reda (Quick Step), Ludovic Turpin (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Guillaume le Floch (Bbox Bouygues Telecom) broke early.
They established a 14 minute advantage before the peloton, led by the Liquigas team, slowly reeled them in, nibbling their lead down to just under 10 minutes after the first of four gruelling climbs.
The gap continued to be diminished before Reda was the first to be caught just ahead of the summit of Salla Valcalda as the steep gradients began to take their toll.
The peloton, expertly marshalled by Szmyd of Liquigas, continued to whittle away at the leaders until Scarponi, Basso, Evans and Marco Pinotti (HTC-Colombia) pulled away with 7km remaining.
That quartet was soon became a duo, as Evans and Basso battled on the final climb, the Italian turning the screw on his Australian counterpart with 3km left to clinch a famous win in front of thousands of spectators on the slopes of the Zoncolan.

@Roz L I dont know what youre words have to do with cycling
chem452002 from U i never expect something smart to read (U R always have something against those guys who tell true stuff)
I think its disgraceful Basso and Vinokourov are allowed to race. Seeing the two of them finish 1st and 5th depresses and annoys me very much. Known drug cheats should be banned for life. Its a joke !
Arroy isn't caving. Porte is a very good time trialer (although how much gas will be in the tank) and is managing the climbs 'ok'. Interesting last week. The winner will earn this title. I think Arroyo and Porte are going to be hoping for 3rd at best.

Dont waste your time responding to nicks like Bobcha, Thomas,HC and dante. Don`t even read what they post.Trust me, it aint worth it.
Once a cheat always a cheat Basso! Let some of the new guys go for it.
Bobcha - Llook up the difference between to and too, and then try using the correct version.
Ra.Planet of The Apes - What does herraising mean? Try to find excuus in any dictionary.
Great victory for Basso, good ride for Evans, Vino, Cunego, Sastre. But Wiggins lost 25 minute, i cant believe, to bad Contador wasnt there
Hey wait a second. This excitement isn't allowed. I thought the Tour of Cali was the second biggest event of the year not the Giro. Yeah right.
Anyone out there know where we can see his data and biological passport results up to and including the Giro, or at least some summary of what the stats all point to? Mick Rogers said after winning the AToC that cycling needs to get away from all this 'negativity' regarding doping, but when guys like Basso are allowed back into the sport and can win like this, well, please excuse us Mick because this is a shame that he is back and winning. That said, every one of the top favourites have had their day so far, what will happen next? Cadel needs to take back time in the mountain TT, the TT's are where he must take time, no excuses if he loses time there.
He's obviously trained hard, and with a second place Saturday and convincing win Sunday, he seems to have timed his peak perfectly. I think the pre-Giro wins by Vino and Cadel showed they were too fit too soon, and doing twelve competitive stages between race days in these conditions were a bit much for trying to maintain a peak. Nibali came in fit but fresh. I'd like to see a Basso, Nibali, Porte podium.
Cadel Evans has put in a strong showing. He's still got a good shot at the GC. But his BMC team is young and not very strong--he got no support from what is left of his team during the lead-up to Monte Zoncolan (or even the last few stages). OTOH, Basso had at least 3 or 4 Liquigas riding with him up to the Monte Zoncolan. But I have to give Basso a lot of credit for his performance on that climb.
Basso is a freaking cheater. Celebrate what? That he is allowed back and all the young pros who are honest cannot ever win because those who rule all let the CHEAT back in!!
To be fair Wiggins is only using the Giro as a warm-up for the tour, and only ever planned to ride hard for the first couple of weeks. If you read the sky website last night, it already mentioned before the stage the Wiggo would be taking his foot off the gas, hence he slid right off the back as soon as the road turned-up, and even his domestiques battled on up the road ahead of him.
Exactly the same prep as last year. We know he entered the Giro 3kg above his TDF weight so not to get sick despite the fact he won't be climbing as well, with the real goals of winning the prologue, the team TT, grabbing the pink jersey and being competitive for the first few days, all accidents aside, it's been a pretty successful Giro.
He may well not go on to win the tour, but anyone who thought they saw a serious Wiggins today is much mistaken.
Awesome ride Basso today, but let's face it, this is his race, when the tour comes round he won't be in the picture. Every team have their goals, and of course the Italian boys should be shining, cycling is all about hitting form, and this is their time.
On Monte Zoncolan we've just witnessed the Basso that we once knew awaken from his Sleeping Beauty sleep. Has Basso reached his peak for 2010? Surely, no one could keep up with Basso on Monte Zoncolan - no one. Basso has been saving himself for this treacherous stage knowing that few would compete. He is going for the win. Basso is the Captain. There is no co-captain. Or will Basso reach his peak during the TDF? The TDF will be a Bloody Mary mixed with a high dosage of hungry riders but few who can climb a Monte Zoncolan. What makes the TDF so mouth watering is the array of riders that take part. Imagine the 2010 Giro with the likes of Contador, Armstrong, A. Schleck,....and the armada of teams ---would we need a TDF? C. Evans has surprised us all. After this stage B. Wiggins will seriously come down to earth and accept that to beat the likes of Contador you must ride like a Basso on Zoncolan. See you all in July.
He might have been implemented in drugs, but I'd like to see Basso win the Giro.
Has to Giro awaken a sleeping giant...a sleeping Basso? Oh...man, if we see the Basso at the TDF that once rode with Lance it's going to be even better.
A great result for Basso. I'm never sure whether he's gritting his teeth or has a permanent smile. I'll opt for the latter - he's a great cyclist to watch and great sporting entertainment. Bad luck Wiggo but still gunning for you. Not really your sort of climb I suppose but good luck in the forthcoming ITT.
wasnt sure he'd show this kind of form again ................ nice to see!
This is the probably happiest day in my life seeing my favorite rider on the top of the world. Again. Disregarding stage 11, and missjudgement by all big teams letting breakaway go, Ivan shows who is who on the Giro. 4 riders for Liquigas in top 20 starting week 3 looking prety solid. Conratulations to Gibo on today's stage-Zoncolan is his mountain.
Wonderful performance by Basso. Classification is almost cleaned up. Porte continues to surprise, still 2nd in race after 15 stages. Cadel needs the rest day big time. Wiggins dropping back on the steep hills of the Dolomittes is no surprise, he will do better in the TdF where the climbs are longer but less vertical.
