Martin Paterson has apologised to Scunthorpe fans after leaving Glanford Park for a £1.3million move to Burnley on Monday. The 21-year-old received criticism from some quarters after making it clear he would like to leave the Iron following their relegation.
"I am a winner, so getting relegated was difficult. It hurt but knowing I could join a Championship club with a history like Burnley's was just too good to turn down," he told Burnley's official website.
"The club wants to push on and with no disrespect to Scunthorpe, I have joined a bigger club with the aim of bettering myself.
"However, I have nothing but thanks to Scunthorpe and the manager, coaching staff and fans for giving me an enjoyable year of Championship football.
"They took to me and I feel I have to apologise for the way I left. But that's modern football and if you have a chance to go and better yourself you have to take it."
