Premier League - Stoke next to eye up Owen

Eurosport - Wed, 24 Jun 19:23:00 2009

Stoke boss Tony Pulis admits he would love the chance to take England striker Michael Owen to the Potteries.

FOOTBALL michael owen newcastle - 0

The 29-year-old will leave Newcastle at the end of the month when his contract expires, and his details have been circulated to top clubs both at home and in Europe.

Having seen Hull counterpart Phil Brown publicly declare his interest in taking the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star to the KC Stadium, Pulis has revealed he would relish the opportunity to persuade Owen his future lies at the Britannia Stadium.

He told the Stoke Sentinel: "You never say never in football, so of course I would be interested in throwing my hat into the ring if it was ever viable.

"I'm not sure whether Michael would want to come here right now, but that situation could always change for him. He would be a great signing for this football club, and he can rest assured our fans would treat him as one of their own.

"I imagine there will be bigger clubs taking an interest in his availability for the moment, and I can't say I have received a copy of his dossier, but that doesn't mean he will end up signing for them necessarily.

"So it could be a deal that comes on to our radar in time and one we would be silly to turn our back on if we could get something sorted with his people."

  4. As a Boro fan, I've absolutely no love for newcastle but owen didn't do anything for them for the time he spent there and I would hate to see a proper club like stoke suckered by his past glories. stay away from him, i think ashton will do a good job for u and theres plenty of other hard working strikers about who will give u a much better return for the money.

  9. Please can we have some other Newcastle news apart from Owen?? I'm bored with this now, he's out of contract and leaving with his sacks full of money for no work, nobody cares. What's happening with other players like Martins, Taylor, Nolan, etc??

  12. How can been injured all the time be treating Newcastle badly?

Look the guy is now just a treatment room player. It started before he left Liverpool with his hamstring and groin. Continued at Real Madrid and got worse at Newcastle. What Owen needs to do now is prove he can stay fit and still score and play.

If Stoke like Hull want to give him that chance. Good luck to them. It could workout great for them or backfire badly. Just hope they don't give him a massive contract. As that will soon drain them if he continues to be injured.

  14. After the way he has treated Newcastle, I can't imagine why any other club would want to even consider signing Owen and it's about time football turned its back on this once great player. It is clear to everyone, that his only loyalties are to himself and his bank balance. Truly a disgrace.

  16. I was one of Owen's biggest fans and was chuffed when he signed. However, zero sympathy for him now. He comes on TV and says he'd like to be playing for a Premiership club. How dare he? If he'd bothered to motivate his little arse and score just ONE goal in any of the last 5 matches he would still be playing for a Premiership side! Alleged £20mil in wages over 4yrs and then he jumps ship when he is part of the reason we're relegated. Smug idiot, I've lost all respect for him. Get Beckford in instead.

  17. the geordies are like the glaswegians in the fact they are passionate about their teams, and to say owen was anything but honest is unfair, he had a bad run of injuries and dont forget football is a contact sport, 80mill for CR when one bad tackle could retire him is just the luck of the draw and i would have owen in a glasgow rangers jersey anytime
