Premier League - Sturridge to join Chelsea

Eurosport - Wed, 24 Jun 09:13:00 2009

Manchester City's teenage striker Daniel Sturridge is to join Chelsea this summer but the exact fee will be decided by a tribunal.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Manchester City Daniel Sturridge - 0

The two clubs have failed to reach an agreement on a suitable compensation package but as the player is under 24, he is not available to sign on a Bosman-style free transfer.

The 19-year-old's contract expires at the end of the summer and City are looking to get a 'development fee' of around £10 million from Chelsea.

Chelsea's valuation of the teenager is thought to be somewhat lower at an estimated £3m.

City rejected Chelsea's initial package and it is now likely that a settlement of around £5m will be agreed which will include a number of add-on clauses related to performance and appearances.

Sturridge is one of the game's top prospects and highly rated by City boss Mark Hughes.

  3. Hughes can only comfort stars at the top end of the game, so then he starts selling all of young stars. I agree with comment 44, Hughes needs out

  4. If an electrician went to his boss and said I will make this company the greatest in England and I want 60K a year to do it, his boss will look at what he has done and if he was a superstar electrician he might consider it but if he was only learning his trade and not proven himself then his boss would say get lost!
How can a 19 year old unproven footballer be so greedy and demand top footballer wages and expect his boss to say ok. don't blame Mark Hughes for Daniel Sturrage leaving you need to blame him and his Agent for not waiting a year or two for him to make a name for himself like the other Academy lads have

  9. Tis a shame. The lad was pretty talented but unfortunately not only did he have fast feet but he also had a fast mouth.

I can understand those that are saying why let such a talent go but MH has to get the harmony in the dressingroom right, a hyperboosted ego type like Sturridge at only 19 isnt going to benefit the team.

The cool way he slid in Robinho for the equaliser against Blackburn under pressure from the defence and time way a fine piece of football from someone so young...trouble is he still hasn't stopped trying to remind us all of it.

  10. Darren M, you're a fool. He's far more likely to rot at City with the amount of strikers they have. Chelsea only have 2 strikers they feel really comfortable using. He'll probably get more playing time there which is only a good thing for him.

  12. I honestly believe that this is a real indication of how agents are ruining football. (we'll not even start on that parasite Joorabchian [excuse the spelling]).

I'm a United fan but to take the blinkers off and be sensible about things this kid looked like a real prospect to me. It seems obvious that his agent has seen a potential payday for himself and 'advised' the boy to go to Chelsea... where he'll rot on the bench like all the rest of their young talent.

  17. The Pope decides to go round a ward in a British hospital and perform a few "miracles"on a select few Patients !
He goes to the 1st patient who is blind , touches his eyes , and the guy say's
"It's a miracle I can see now , thank you very much !
He then goes to the 2nd patient who is deaf , touches his ears , and the guy say's
"It's a miracle I can hear now , thank you very much !
He then goes to the third patient who comes from chelski london , and confined to a wheel chair , before he gets a chance to do anything the Patient says " NO, BACK OFF , Im on invalidity Benefit!!!!!

  18. #45 Sturridge isnt wiv the U21s cos hes injured, but its just another sign of the the 'red one' trying to ruin city, paying 15m for santa cruz, butting letting go of one of our hottest talents for peanuts, idiot, btw chelski offered us 10m for sturridge 2 years ago, if we wanted to sel him we shouldve done it then.

  19. This is long term bad news for City. If they wish to build a club that will break the top 4 they need to build for the future and holding on to young talent is key to that aim. If I were a City fan I would be worried by this.
