Alex Smith compared the allure of club football to "a drug" after taking up his post as assistant to new Falkirk head coach Eddie May.
The 69-year-old former St Mirren, Aberdeen and Dundee United boss was paraded on Tuesday at the club's training base at Stirling University along with May and second assistant coach Steven Pressley.
He said: "It's fantastic, a great feeling, like the first time I came in to management."
Falkirk revealed a new management structure at the club with a Head of Football Development to be appointed later but veteran boss Smith, who had been scouting for Scotland manager George Burley, looked forward to returning to day-to-day involvement with the Bairns.
He added: "Eddie phoned me about a fortnight and asked if I would work with him and I said, 'Why not?'
"I have enjoyed what I was doing with the international team, bringing back reports for George but I've missed the everyday working within football, working towards getting a result on a Saturday.
"But it's a drug, even though I know you tend to forget the days when you don't get a result and you are not in a good mood.
"I will be a coach first of all, to help with the development of the team and to get results.
"The other task is the development of the management team, to guide them and warn them of the usual pitfalls that you come across."
