Alves off target for beaten Boro

Thu 24 Jul, 11:15 PM

Afonso Alves started as a lone frontman in a 4-5-1 for Middlesbrough - and he missed the best chances in a 1-0 defeat to Vitoria Guimaraes.Boro had by far the better of the play in Faro but they were made to pay for their profligacy in the dying seconds when Dinis fired a sublime free-kick past Ross Turnbull, who was one of only two players to play the full 90 minutes.

Adam Johnson was the other and the winger was one of the stars for Gareth Southgate's side.

He was brought down on the edge of the box early in the first half to present Alves with a free-kick opportunity that he was narrowly off target with, and set up the Brazilian again before the interval, with Alves challenged just as he was about to unleash.

Southgate made a raft of changes at the break, with Joe Bennett impressing and Robert Huth going closest to breaking the deadlock with a header before Dinis' late strike.
