Robbo has England future - Shilton

Thu 24 Jul, 12:15 PM

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has offered Paul Robinson hope by insisting his international career can get back on track.Robinson lost his England place to David James when his form dipped last season and his position at Tottenham has looked uncertain following the arrival of Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven.

But Shilton, who holds the England record with his 125 caps, feels the 28-year-old's experience means there could still be a role in Fabio Capello's squad.

"I still feel there is a lot of improvement in Robinson, he has a lot of ability and had a spell of games when he didn't concede a goal for England," Shilton said, speaking at an event organised by England Team Sponsors Nationwide Building Society.

"He's still our next most experienced goalkeeper (after James), who is there for experienced goalkeepers after that?

"Only those two have played a lot of games, Robinson and David James, so they are going to be the foundation of the England team but whether there is enough time for another one to come through, I can't say."

Shilton was 40 when he won his last England cap and he paid little attention to claims from Sir Alex Ferguson Chelsea's squad were too old to challenge Manchester United next season.

"As you get older your experience should give you more hunger because you want more," he said. "You want to stay in the game, you want to win things and I think the experience side of it helps.

"Listen, these days players are fitter now than they've ever been. It's the desire to want to go on. When players have millions in the bank it's how long they want to go on for. It's all down to the individual.

"If you're talking about World Cup and championships, if you haven't got the desire then it's time to pack up."

  2. It's all about the bottle. The Gary Neville divot incident, some shocking defensive support, and the public lambasting he received after it must have effected his nerve. You could almost see it in his face for the rest of the season. It's always a shame to see good players go, but this might be the re-making of him.

  3. i think robbo got more blmae then he deserved, sure he wasn't on his best form last year, but look at the spurs defence, allowing a very high number of goals overall, certaintly that can't be all attributed to one player. best of luck to him, it will be ahrd to win his starting spot back now for spurs with the signing of gomes, let alone england.....

  4. if robbo can get back to the form he had during his main spell in the england team, he'll be fine, a fair number of goals against at spurs we're his errors and the previous seasons showed he was so much better, he can reclaim his form and hopefully will
