Italian Job At Catterick

Thu 24 Jul, 07:09 AM

Italian-born Andrea Atzeni completed 24 hours he will not forget in a hurry when scoring on the Nigel Tinkler-trained Dan Tucker (5-2) in the Willie Carson - Pinker's Pond Apprentice Handicap at Catterick.

The 17-year-old had recorded the first win of his fledgling career at Great Leighs on Tuesday night and wasted little time in following up in North Yorkshire.

Atzeni is based with Marco Botti in Newmarket and Tinkler said: "The race was for apprentices who had not ridden a winner before July 20 and Andrea was the most experienced of them, I think he had had about 20 rides."

There was a nasty incident when Ben Bacchus came down after about half a mile out but both horse and his rider Holly Hall escaped injury.

Scorton-based David Barker treated the locals to a 27-1 double when Hypnosis and Whinhill House scorched to victory over five furlongs, both ridden by Tony Hamilton.

Hypnosis (6-1) has developed quite a liking for this track and she came out best in the featured Sky Bet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Festival Handicap, although the race was marred by a fatal injury to Deserted Dane sustained in the stalls.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the Alan Swinbank-trained runner launched himself before the gates opened, unfortunately hitting his head on the roof of the stalls. He died almost immediately.

Tom Eaves, deputising for Robert Winston who gave up his two rides of the afternoon because of a throat infection, escaped injury.

Hypnosis went clear about a furlong and a half out and stuck to her task in the gamest fashion to hold off Nomoreblondes and the favourite Princess Ellis by a length and a nose.

The win was a triumph for Barker and owner Robert Snowden's patience, and the former said: "Robert was very patient when she was banned for six months for having had too many stall tests and I am pleased for her as she is very speedy and is the first time this year she has had decent ground."

Whinhill House (3-1) got back up on the line after being headed by Raccoon to claim the Go Racing At Doncaster Tomorrow Night Claiming Stakes, and Barker went on: "He has been declared to run at Thirsk on Friday and as long as he is OK he will go there under a 3lb penalty.

"He runs in an apprentice race he won last year and Nick Lawes who rode him that day, will ride him again."

Aldermoor easily landed a hefty gamble under Daniel Tudhope in the Yorkshire Radio Maiden Stakes.

Stuart Williams' youngster was backed at 25-1 in the morning exchanges and was a 6-1 chance on course at the off.

"He had been going well enough at home to come to Catterick (for his debut), but with all respect to Catterick he would not have gone to Newmarket or Royal Ascot for his first run," said Williams.

Pride Of Kings (6-1) made it third time lucky under Greg Fairley in the 15th August Is Alpha 103.2 Ladies Night Nursery, getting home by a nose from Rapid Release.

"He is a handy little horse and this track suited him - our two-year-olds have hit form now," said Deirdre Johnston, wife of winning trainer Mark.

David Allan brought Eric Alston's Johnston's Glory (16-1) with a perfectly-timed run to take the Book On-Line@catterickbridge.co.uk Handicap, beating Darcy's Pride by three-quarters of a length.
