ATP Tour - Federer out, Murray through in Toronto

Eurosport - Thu, 24 Jul 19:42:00 2008

Roger Federer's status as world number one is under threat after he suffered a shock second-round defeat to Gilles Simon at the Toronto Masters.

TENNIS: World number one Roger Federer leaves the court after losing to Gilles Simon in the second round of the Toronto Masters - 0

British number one Andy Murray eased into the third round with a straight-sets win over Sweden's Thomas Johansson.

Back on court for the first time since his epic loss to Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon final, Federer was beaten 2-6 7-5 6-4 and his ranking is now under serious threat from Nadal who beat American qualifier Jesse Levine 6-4 6-2.

After starting 2008 with a lead of 1,445 ranking points over the Spaniard, an off-the-boil season which now includes 10 defeats in 53 matches has Federer facing the possibility of losing the top spot he has held for 234 weeks since 2004.

While Nadal cannot overtake him even with a second title in Canada, site of his first career hardcourt crown, the pressure is now intense on 12-time Grand Slam champion Federer.

Only a few hundred points will separate the leading pair if Nadal does well this week.

Federer had looked ready to take out his Wimbledon disappointment on Simon when he won the first four games on the way to the opening set.

But Frenchman Simon, riding the momentum from his championship win in Indianapolis on Sunday, refused to buckle, battling back to beat the 12-times Grand Slam winner and reach the third round.

It was the first time Federer had lost his opening match in a tournament since falling to Murray in Dubai in March.

"The hardcourt season just started so it is not the end of the world but I wish I could have started better," Federer said. "I like this surface, I like this tournament, I have done well in the past here so it definitely hurts.

"I have to regroup and look forward. The bigger picture is the Olympic Games and the US Open and those are the places I really want to win so I have to make sure I am ready for that."

The 22nd-ranked Simon represented a tricky opponent for the rusty Federer, who had only resumed practice four days before arriving in Toronto and received a first-round bye.

Simon, meanwhile, was well into his hardcourt campaign after claiming his fourth career win and second title of the season in Indianapolis with a straight-sets victory over Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

"I was playing like I was in a dream," Simon said. "I just saw the ball and hit it as hard as possible.

"I don't know, it is really unbelievable to beat Roger like this. I'm so confident actually because I won the tournament last week.

"For sure this is my best victory. I don't think that you win so many times against the number one."

Nadal, also back in action for the first time since Wimbledon, struggled to find his rhythm and fell 4-1 behind in the opening set against Levine.

But once the Spaniard found his range his opponent had few answers, Nadal tearing through the next five games to take the first set and cruise to an easy victory which stretched his unbeaten run to 25 matches.

"The first match is always tough, especially after one week off after Wimbledon," said Nadal, who claimed his first career hardcourt title in Canada in 2005. "I only had a few days for practice, it's important to think that I can come back and I won."

Nadal's next assignment will be against Russia's Igor Andreev , who upset 16th seed Tomas Berdych 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Murray was forced to wait to begin his match against Johansson, as a six-hour rain delay caused havoc to the match schedule.

But when he finally did make it to the court it was fairly plain sailing for the Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who saw off his opponent 6-4 6-4.

Murray is seeded eighth in the draw, meaning he is on course to meet defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the last eight.

Four other seeds advanced, with number four Nikolay Davydenko putting out German Tommy Haas 6-3 7-6 and David Ferrer beating American Robby Ginepri 6-4 6-4.

Seventh seed James Blake overhauled Swede Jonas Bjorkman 1-6 6-1 6-2 and France's Richard Gasquet earned a 7-5 6-3 win over Andrey Kudryavtsev.

  1. I see Tennis is more intersting now because of batling between 2 top names blus some other names can be nosiy. yes more intersting than few years ago when no body can defeat the legand Federer. I think every one see the charm and the magic of Federe. Nadal is one of amazing players can fight Federe and might reach the top for once but Federe not the one he leave it easily, because for long time I belevied Federe need to be charged, need to know that he should keep work more so he can be the top of the top in th history.

  2. My question exactly Ghidush. I've tried modifying my text, rewriting it etc. ad infinitum and I still get the "invalid commment" result. It's been very time consuming and frustrating, especially if the post contains no offensive content or internet links. What the hell is the criteria used to invalidate comments? It's unfair to invite comments, have people work hard to produce them and then have some deficient cheap software application reject them. Come on Yahoo/Eurosport. Give us a break here. (that said, I dig the site -it's just that you've got me tearing my hair out at the moment) CHEERS

  5. Federer is the Best Lawn Tennis Player that have ever played in the world, i do not think borris becker knows that, he has fogotten so soon, come to think of it, he was not as successful as Federer, Federer is the Greatest, I will not give Nadal a low rate because he plays well and he is young. but when borris becker begin to intimidate Federer by saying Nadal is the greatest player and he is the champion and that he will be the number one, borris becker was opportuned to have played tennis. for example in a school, there are classes of student who are doing well in there respectative classes. so nadal will be world number in the future and we know that, Federer was not A Champion or World Number from birth, he work for it and he merit it. even when Federer has not won any grand slam this year, he remain at the top, he is already ahead. I believe in you FED, I am always motivated when i watch you play. Please forget about your past and look into your future, i know you might not know how rated you are, how your fans far and wide have made you a household name. even if you are world number two, I will always be motivated by you. Always know that i am your friend and fan, an african who lives in spain. from kingsville. peace-out

  7. Is a pity that roger federer carrer is going down due to some reasons below.he should stop taking his fiance along with him to any competition. he should concentrate on his game and stop giving away cheap points to opponent. he still remain the best tennis player in the world.he has spirit of sportmanship when he looses and when he wins. unlike nadal who shows no emotion when he looses, only when he wins that he show some little emotion. thats why i dont like him. djokovic do applaud opponent for beautifull display, i love him for that. federer can still raise up him game and win us open. for the fact he is loosing at the moment does not mean nadal is better that him.nadal should go ahead and win more gram slam concecutively, suppass federer b4 we can rate him ahead of federer and not just five gram slam to twelve. i read beck comments saying nadal is better. thats shows he is jealous of federer. the only man that has right to say such word is pete sampras and no one else. his gram slam record is still unbeatable. apart from sampras the rest should remain silent and respect roger cause he is ahead of them and better than them. tell federer i still remain his best friend that he has never come across. FROM GIFT.

  8. rhymes, wonder why. I have an e-mail addy I'm going to close down soon - as soon as I'vemoved the mails I want to keep to another one - but it says no URLs on here. Can I risk putting it on? I have several people I'm in contact with from other MBs (like the 'old' Eurosport one, before it moved to Yahoo) and enjoy discussing tennis with like minds.

  11. Rhymes, I watched the 1st set - when Roger was cruising - then set my VCR, so watched most of the rest this afternoon. The 2nd set Roger went off, in the 3rd he appeared to be back in control, but after he missed an easy volley to get the 2nd break - which in all probability would have won him the match - he went downhill. I didn't actually see the last 3 games as my tape ran out, but I was told he shot himself in the foot & Helen appears to have confirmed this.
I really hope this is his wake-up call & he picks himself up for Cinci & the Olympics. He needs to win a t'ment to get his confidence back.

  13. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose - that`s life! That happens even to the best ! Still, I feel bad for Federer and it seems strange a little to see him defeated not by Nadal, but by someone else ...

  15. People need to stop getting carried away with this talk of Federer's time being over. He recovered from mononucleosis far quicker than Ancic did, so that tells me that he is strong. He could not regain full health before Wimbledon, but I would bet money that he will before the US Open. Then we will see if Nadal is really ready to replace him as number one for any stretch of time. I'm looking forward to 2009. Simple fact: if Nadal can win Wimbledon, Federer can win Roland Garros. If that happens, especially if Federer goes and wins 3 or 4 of the Slams, a lot of you suckers are going to be picking toe jam out your mouths for a long time.

  16. Hey there Helen. Likewise - nice to see you're following this. The late hours are killing me though. As you said it's a bit of a pain.I might skip the night session today but the fact that it's on free TV here in Spain is a great temptation. Lleyton's not playing this. Guess he's nursing his hip. Apparently, he's playing the olympics and it wouldn't surprise me if that was his only preparation for Flushing Meadows. His results at RG and Wimbledon were pretty good when you consider he played just the one warm up tournament for each. I can't post the link for the Toronto draw here (it'd be classed as an "invalid comment"), but if you search for "rogers cup", that seems to be the best way of finding it. Good luck and take care.

  17. hey RHYMES! nice to have you back!
you beat me to it: i was just going to say that nadal didn't have an easy match either and what he played wasn't his best tennis. however, unlike Federer, he kept his wits about him and did his name and reputation justice, despite the razzmatazz around him.
now that he's survived his first match (like he himself said, always a difficult one especially when you change surfaces), i hope he'll work on where he's vulnerable.
i'm so sorry marat's out. i was really hoping to see him play (and hopefully win). is hewitt playing? i haven't checked the board. now that his ruthless nemesis is out, he might make it all the way.
anyway, what do you think guys? is playing the Olympics a sensible decision in an already busy summer?
    take care

and yeah TO THE EUROSPORT PEOPLE: PUT AND END TO THE SPAMMING!!!!!!

  19. Nadal IMO didn't play very well and if you contrasted his first set with that of Fed, you'd've had to acknowledge that Roger looked much more comfortable on the court and was playing a level above that of his arch rival. Rafa, however, worked very hard to turn the match around and never lost his concentration. Losing one's concentration on a tennis court is perhaps much more lethal than not playing at the top of your form (though the two are often related) and in this respect is very worrying for Roger (who also had an attitude problem IMO). Hopefully his coach (Jose Higueras, who I imagine is getting well paid for this) will make that point very strongly to him, even at the risk of angering Fed. Rafa still looks more vulnerable on this surface to me, at least for the moment. I was very impressed by Djokovic against Dancevic (a tough opponent here in front of the home crowd). Special mention for Acasuso, a clay courter who has now got two excellent victories under his belt against Gulbis and Gonzalez. He'll start off second favourite again against Simon, but he's having a great tournament. Marat's out, unfortunately, but the Wawrinka/Murray match up looks very interesting as does David Ferrer against Gasquet. Gasquet hates playing Ferrer and has even gone on record as saying he prefer to play Nadal and Federer together rather than against this guy. And Davydenko IMO is a possible winner here, as is Roddick. Exciting matches to come. CHEERS
