Emad Metab's move to Bristol City could be in doubt when he played for Al-Ahly in the Cairo derby - after signing for the Robins.

Metab, 25, signed a three-year contract and was presented at Ashton Gate after City and Ahly agreed a £1.5 million fee last week - a club record for Gary Johnson's side.

And reports in Egypt claimed that a furious Johnson ripped his contract up, although the player's agent insisted that he was led to believe he was still Ahly's until the approval of his work permit application.

"A misunderstanding made us believe that Emad's participation in the game was fully acknowledged by Bristol," Nader Shawki told FilGoal. "Bristol's representative, Mohamed Hamid, informed us that there would be no problem if Metab played his last game.

"But then we were surprised to learn the frustration of Bristol officials to the extent that the transfer could be cancelled.

"I have already spoken to Gary Johnson and I hope we can resolve the problem, because Emad didn't mean any disrespect to the English club."

Metab's Egypt strike partner Amr Zaki recently completed a £1m loan move to Wigan.

City have meanwhile seen a bid - thought to be in excess of £1m - accepted for Coventry and Malta striker Michael Mifsud.
