Premier League - Blackburn accept Villa Friedel bid

Eurosport - Thu, 24 Jul 09:54:00 2008

Blackburn Rovers have accepted a £2 million bid from Aston Villa for goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League - Brad Friedel, Blackburn - 0

The big American would replace Scott Carson in the Villa goal, following the England international's exit after his loan deal expired. Manchester City are also reported to be interested in signing him.

Friedel moved to Blackburn from Liverpool in 2000 on a free transfer and has gone on to make over 350 appearances for the club, but earlier this month indicated that he was prepared to seek a new challenge elsewhere.

The 37-year-old, capped 80 times for USA before his international retirement, is regarded as one of the most consistently high-performing custodians in the Premier League.

The move would be a severe blow for new Blackburn boss Paul Ince, who will also have to fight off interest in midfielder David Bentley and striker Roque Santa Cruz in the build-up to the new season.

  2. At times over the past eight years the Rovers defense has been less than organized but there was always Big Brad at the back to minimize the damage. It is a melancholy day whenever a stalwart contributor moves to another club. On the other hand he is thrity-seven and the years seemed to be showing a bit in the past two seasons. The biggest question is who can or will replace him. I'd rather have seen Bentley leave (and he probably will before the year is through) but changing partners is part and parcel of modern football. Personally I appreciate his contribution over the years and wish him and Villa well-except for when they are playing the Rovers of course.

I am a fan of only three teams; BRFC, Preston and whoever is playing ManU.

  6. As a Villa fan I'm so glad we've got Brad even at the age of 37. He's the most underrated keeper in the premiership by a mile and will bring so much confidence to the back line. Credit to the chairman for pulling the string there.

  9. Brad's been a great keeper for Rovers and I am sorry to see him leave, however there is no point in trying to keep any player who wants to go.

Good luck to him and I hope he gets the reception he deserves when he returns to Ewood, it would also be great if he had a nightmare in goal that day.

  11. well what can i say .....Brad did fantastic for us but he wanted to leave and if any player wants to leave a club ...then let them go !!!! They don't have the heart to play for the club if they want to leave. I wish that Bentley would go also then we can get on with things. Santa Cruz has stated on more than 1 occasion that he is staying put 'for at least 1 more season' If you ask me all this unsettlement at Rovers has been caused by Mark Hughes leaving the club ...but hey ho money talks !!! We will be OK this coming season ....we always are :-)

  14. Ince needs to recruit his own players and the earlier the better for him bcos some of the present players may not like to play for him, Blackburn Rovers should prepare to lose more players. @ Brad: he has more life yet in him, Villa will get their value on the acquisition
