Finland midfielder Teemu Tainio has signed for Sunderland from Tottenham Hotspur after he passed a medical at the north-east club.
The 28-year-old joins Roy Keane's side for an undisclosed fee.
Full-back Pascal Chimbonda is also expected to be confirmed as a Black Cats player after undergoing tests at the Stadium of Light, while offers remain on the table for defender Younes Kaboul and attacking midfielder Steed Malbranque.
"I'm delighted to sign a player of Teemu's experience and quality," Keane said. "Teemu has shown versatility, playing in different midfielder positions for both Tottenham and his previous club, Auxerre.
"But his experience in particular, and the fact that he has played more than 40 international games, shows he has a lot to offer Sunderland."
The size of the fee is understood to be around £4 million but dependent on whether other players sign for the Wearside club from Spurs.
Tainio (pictured) stated his desire to work with Keane: "Of course it's flattering that such a legend would like me to play in his team. Sunderland will be an interesting option.
"Sunderland have a great stadium as well as tremendous fans.
"I understand they are interested in playing me in the centre of midfield."

gonzalo.c you obviously dont know much about football so when you grow up come back and have a serious chat ok mate
to all the sad mackems all you have done is bought a couple of reserve team players froms spurs ! hardly a major force and suddenly you seem to think you are going to be world beaters, please wake up and realise you are and always will be @#$% lol
Black Cats-sheesh. More like MEERCATS-pop up, look around, then go back down again
i'd just like to say Thank You to our board and manager, we have the stadium and facilities. Now i believe we'll get the players that this club deserves. Tainio, already signed, n if we get any more Spurs players in, then thank you to spurs aswell. they can only improve this up and coming squad...HAWAAY THE LADS
Well well done sunderland for getting promotion to the premiership how can you have a go at newcastle for not winning things when you have gone up and down more times than a yo-yo at least we stay in the premiership and get to finals and attract big names to name a few shearer, owen, who have you ever had better than them 2.so if you think splashing money on some spurs rejects,is going to make you in to some sort of super team think again.
sunderland is really doing their best to improve the team, this players im sure will give more options for KEANE. Im hoping they can add few more. GOOD LUCK TO MY TEAM, GOOD LUCK TO ROY KEANE AND THE PLAYERS, HOPEFULLY WE CAN MAKE IT AT 10th PLACE THIS YEAR. IVE BEEN A SUNDERLAND FAN WHEN KEANE WAS HIRED TO BE THEIR MANAGER, THEY MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. GO BLACK CATS!!!!
congrates keano, who's next?
Tainio & Malbranque wore the SPURS shirt with honor, the other two dont even rate their names being mentioned. As a life long fan it is the effort given, Id rather have
100% from Tainio or Malbranque than 50% of a so called Superstar. We still need to clear out those who are not worthy of the HONOR of wearing the Spurs Kit. It doesnt take honor to wear RED no matter who the team is.
Chimbonda better than Wes Brown?
You are drunk mate. Step away from the keyboard and go to bed.
Kaboul came to the spurs with a good reputation.Due to some reason,he failed to deliver. But it is sure that a manager of Jol's standard would never buy a rubbish.Unfortunately In spurs, the buying and selling is decided by someone else, the Manager do not have the right to say the last word.I am sure kaboul will flourish at Sunderland and he will prove his doubters wrong.I have seen his U21 international matches and that is the reason Y i am so soure about his ability.Every new player need time to adjust with the pace of EPL.Chimboda is better than Belletti or Arbeola or even Wes brown. But his attitude makes him fail.Malbronque and Tainio will surely change the sunderland midfield who have always fails to support their above average striking department.Under Keane i am sure SUNDERLAND will prosper to major heights.Good luck Keano!!I am not a sunderland fan,but i like them just because of KEANE.
championship*
Kev.Robertson, maybe keane doesnt have that much experience in the transfer market, but believe me he will get good at it. Plus dont you realize they are in the EPL not in the champions? From what i saw last season from Newcastle, they should be playing down! hah such good players but no delivery? Good luck this season bro
kaboul is terrible, dont fool yourself
malbranque moves with the ball well but misses way too many chances, maybe because he has been out of position, who knows
chimbonda cries way too much and thinks he is better then he is, no loss for spurs if he leaves
tainio was good for spurs, solid role player, didn't hear much from him, just did his job on the team as a sub and sometimes starting, he would be a solid addition for any team
if sunderland want to buy them all spurs will still be alright, although i think malbranque would still be a good player for spurs, kaboul, i dont know, captain of the french u21, havnt seen anything thou from him, maybe he is just waiting for a break out season
tainio is very impressive, so is malbranque but chimbonda is an average player and kaboul isn't good enough for the EPL. but spurs will really miss tainio next season for sure:(
the only player out of that 4 ( as a spurs fan) that i will miss is teemu he is a fantastic solid midfielder a great squad , bench and first teamer over the the years please just let me say thank you if your listening . ok steed scores but we have played him out of position for nearly 2 years without him maybe we can give lennon a chance . chimbonda and kaboul good riddance to bad rubbish just a shame to score past you later in the season bad attitudes and work ethics the pair of them..
If Newcastle supporters want to comment on Sunderland buying players who don't win things i can only say ok you lot are the champion money wasters. After all how much money have Newcastle spent and won ZERO, you should change your name from the mags to the balloons, coz all this talk about being a big club is nothing more than hot air, isn't it?
as a newcastle fan i think its great sunderland are adding such quality lol to their team !!!!!! keane hasnt got a clue in transfer market 70million in 2 years ! on what another story of a good player who cant make it as a top flight manager
I am sorry Warren, but Tainio played like 16 games, Kaboul maybe 20.
Who, exactly got Spurs into Europe? Because I can tell you my short-sighted friend, that if it was this 4 , Ramos would not part with them for 230 million.
Perhaps, you need to wake up. Why would Spurs sell them if they can't do without them?
open my eyes, bet spurs are laughing dumping that lot, didnt hear any club in a bidding war for them...
Charly K...They got Spurs to Europe last year whilst we just survived. Open your eyes, Tainio is quality and Chimbonda/Malbranque will be good first tema players. Simple!!!!
