Kimi Raikkonen has refused to commit to Formula One beyond the end of his Ferrari contract in 2009.
The reigning world champion, who had a lacklustre German Grand Prix last weekend, also defended himself against rumours that his heart is no longer in the competition.
"I am not in a hurry to decide," Raikkonen told El Mundo. "I have one more year on my contract that I want to fulfil.
"For 2010, we will see. It is not an easy decision, it is necessary to evaluate many things.
"I don't feel like I need to explain, I will make my decision when I am ready. Ferrari is not rushing me either.
"The desire to win hasn't decreased at all."
Before the race at Hockenheim Raikkonen had insisted that he would not break his current contract with Italian outfit Ferrari and would definitely drive for them next season.
The 28-year-old Finn responded positively to questions about the possibility of working with Spanish Renault driver Fernando Alonso at the Scuderia then or in 2010.
"Why not?" he said. "Who knows?
"But I am not the one who makes the decisions about drivers."
Raikkonen added that should he decide to retire, boredom would not be a problem for him.
"There are many things to do outside of Formula One - I will find ways to amuse myself," he said. "I have never had problems with having spare time."
Raikkonen is now seven points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton - who won the German GP for McLaren - with team-mate Felipe Massa also ahead of him, three points better off.

Ferrari need to immediately start looking at replicating or at least simulating the new McLaren asymmetrical side pod design. Or they will lose touch with the McLaren development program very quickly. A design that came in for Silverstone and Hockenheim. McLaren have cleverly started to use a new thicker oil developed by Mobil. This is allowing them to run a much smaller (surface area) asymmetrical cooling design on one side of the car. The longer the other teams leave it the more McLaren will pull away, this innovation combined with Hamilton's driving ability could prove deadly.
Regardless of how people feel about kimi or Lewis or any of the other drivers it will be down to all of the variables like reliability/weather and yes how a driver feels on the day and thats why i sit down on a sunday afternoon to watch F1. Like him or hate him Lewis has an almost child like enthusiasm (the glass is always half full) .Its a breath of fresh air in a very cynical world. As for the Ferrari i think theyve been caught on the hop by Maclaren and it will be interesting to see how quickly they can sort it out without the talents of Ross Brawn to steady the ship. With regards to Alonso i will never forgive him for what he did to Maclaren for purely spiteful reasons.but he is a racer unfortunately for him he doesnt have the car under him for his style of driving hes used to leading from the front doesnt like being in the pack and hes definately not a team player not even within the high stakes environment of a F1 team
i can tell you for nothing , kimi wont retire in 2009, no way, he will win the champ this year wait and see, do you think ferrari are stupid
gsrnation, if you like arrogant assholish wannabes at Ferrari nice, but then they could use also Ralle.
In the end, it would be Kimi's decision whether he would still like to continue racing or not. And people have to respect whatever decision he makes. But I would really love to see him kick Blabber Mouth Hamilton's ass a couple more times for the F1 Champioships :)
LOL kwadrinio well you sound like you know everything telling the others they have no knoladge of F1 and wow sounds like you had a great racing experience, hmm well one thing i agree with is Alonso is a BAD looser and not a team player but i have personally raced against the other drivers (not button) me and heikkie were even team mates in Formula Renault. Kimi even in his early days in F Renault he was a great driver but no team input and no personallity, LH has ALWAYS done well NOT luck (well some like all drivers) but how can you say Kimi is the better driver when LH has shown him the way infact the team always screws Louis up and he still bounces back luck hmmmm nar great driving skills and a nice bloke.
All the commenting people must not have been following F1 for about a half century as I have. And they must have never been in a racing car on a racing track as I have. All sound like sucky newcomers. Alonso is a prettyboy crybaby. Hamilton is a loudmouth lucky s.o.b. Kimi is a real champ who knows how to win an uphill fight. See you at the end of the season, people, when Kimi gets crowned, Hamilton gets less and Alonso gets out. I'd puke if that little bawl-baby was in a beloved red rocket. Kimi's problem now is Domenicali. Also, just watch Button fly when Ross Braun has time to work his magic on the Honda.
the only thing i would say is ....may the best F1 drivers win ... who ever will win , God Bless him ...to be a driver in F1 is not easy at all , but everybody has there own ability in life ...to have this kind of talent and to be a F1 Driver is absolutely nice , but of course there is also some risk factor ..
Typical sensationalist headline based on nothing. The only thing this kind of headline promotes (as is the intention of the journalist) is getting the article to the top of the pile. It is the same as everyone talking themselves into a depressing recession. The power of media folks. Don't believe everything you read.
bbw you make me sick. Why, tell us all, is Lewis Hamilton not a true Brit? Don't beat about the bush, come on, tell us what you think. The remaining 99.9% of Britain can then pack you off to the artic while we enjoy the TRUE BRIT LH romping to the title.
As mentioned before, bring Alonso into Ferrari for next year; best for both parties. As things stand right now the WDC is being gift wrapped and handed to LH and McLaren by Ferrari. If Alonso is in the cockpit next year at least then we will have two fantastic teams in McLaren and Ferrari with the two best drivers on the circiut (Alonso and Hamilton) really going for it. I am not a LH fan but one thing is for sure, he not only has huge talent he also has that never say die attitude which for me is the best quality a drive can have; Alonso has it as well; lets see the two best combinations battling it out next year; after all, i am sure both McLaren and LH would prefer to win through sheer brilliance, determination. guts, speed rather than being handed the title. Come on Ferrari wake up, your drivers do not have the Schumacher attitude
Valentino Rossi would be great he would breath life in to that team.
alonso for ferrari. great! thats them out of the running so! he does not deserve a drive the tratious *&*&*&!
It is really hellarious how everyone pretend to be an expert on what Kimi is going to do or should do, whether media or commentators. 4 races ago when he had good results and things were going his way, everyone was saying horray and were condemning Phillipe Massa, now things started going in the opposite direction. Feels like being in a roman collesium with over dramatic audience who just go with the flow. Well, Kimi, Phillipe and Lewis are all good drivers, and as wel all know, despite the reluctance of lots of us to admit it, you can have good days and bad days in formula 1. No one mentioned retirement when Michael Schumacher had a terrible season in 2005 when he only won one race because all the good cars didn't compete. whe should quit being judgemental and make up stories based on a misfortune in a couple of races. No one mentioned anything about retirement when Alonso was overperformed by the rouckie Hamilton last year or when he mover to Renault this year and is having a terrible season. I think we owe it to all the guys just to let them decide thier future, it is thier business to do that, not ours.
Get back on your yacht Kimi, it's party time. You are a good driver and you are quick but your heart hasn't been in it for ages. Enjoy your millions and give someone else a chance. You will always exist as part of a long line of Finnish motor racing greats.
so long turd head
Kimi to retire? Only if thats what he wants to do he always said he didnt want to stay for as long as Schumacher or Coulthard.
Alonso to Ferrari to replace him? Never! Last year when Alonso went through his phase of criticising LH and McL Luca DeMontezemmelo said that he does not want Alonso in a Ferrari. He said that by his actions and words Alonso proved he was not a true team player.
Where does it say in the article that he is considering retirement. This article should be pulled out.
Look at the results for the year so far. There are still 8 races left. Plenty of time for ups and downs for both Ferrari and McLaren. Lewis Hamilton should feel very good about his chances right now, but he better not lose track of the fact that Massa and Kimi are right behind him in the standings. Things can change in a hurry in F1.
i still rate kimi as the most gifted driver on the circuit. ferrari started bright but now just seem off the pace as the season has progressed, while mclaren's car is making obvious improvements. if it was just kimi who was lacking then i wouldn't blame the car, but massa seems to be struggling also...
