Tour de France - Kohl tips Evans for victory

Eurosport - Thu, 24 Jul 11:50:00 2008

EXCLUSIVE! Gerolsteiner's Bernhard Kohl singled out Cadel Evans as the big favourite to win the Tour de France after both finished in the main group of favourites on stage 16.

Though the Australian lost nine seconds and the yellow jersey on Sunday's mountain-top finish in Prato Nevoso, he followed the punishing tempo set by CSC up the Cime de la Bonette-Restefond, and held his nerve on the hair-raising descent into Jausiers.

"I think he is now the big favourite," Kohl told Eurosport.yahoo.com.

"In the time-trial he is the strongest one of the guys in the top five or six and if he can follow tomorrow then he is the big favourite for the Tour."

Kohl himself has emerged as a surprise package with a series of excellent showings in the mountains, and once again strengthened his position on the general classification - in which he lies second, seven seconds behind Frank Schleck - by finishing in the yellow jersey group.

"It was a really hard day," Kohl explained.

"There was a really big breakaway in the beginning with 25 guys and CSC controlled the rest really well but it was a really good day for me as Christian Vandevelde lost three minutes and Denis Menchov lost 30 seconds and that's important for me as I need a little more time for the time trial."

With the mountain jersey in his possession, Kohl has the chance of success on two fronts, though he set the record straight on his priorities ahead of Wednesday's stage into Alpe d'Huez.

"The plan tomorrow is to follow the guys from CSC, they are very strong as we have seen here," Kohl added.

"I'm very happy to have this jersey. I'm riding for the general classification and if I can take some points in the mountains then I'll take them. But if there's a breakaway like today then I have no chance for the points."

  1. Cadel does what he needs to do to win.

The tour is made up of a different collection of riders. You have the sprinters, who are powerful but heavy, and dominate on the flat stages. Then you have the climbers, who are light and can ascend the mountains but don't have the powerful acceleration of the sprinters. The sprinters get left behind on the climbs, but the climbers are protected by the peloton on the flats.

That's where the time trial is so important - it identifies the best overall rider in the group and brings the pure climbers back to the field. So what if Evans doesn't attack on the mountains? He's not a pure climber and will admit the same himself. But he's the best overall rider in this tour and therefore if he wins the yellow jersey it will be 100% deserved.

He may not compare to the likes of Armstrong, Merkcx, Indurain etc but he doesn't need to. He only needs to be better that Sastre, Schleck, et al

  2. Cadel Evans, always defending, always following other cyclists, nothing of his own, no character. All the winners we ve seen, all the great names were good at attacking, we saw them shine in the mountains. Forget cycling giants like Lance Armstrong, Eddy mercx, Indurian etc, Evans cant even be compared to cyclists like Eskartin, Zulle, Mancebo, Virenque, Zubeldia , kloden and many others ,those had guts and talent.
It is nothing personal against Cadel Evans, I will be a fan if he kicks the ass of the others in the mountains. But he is not like that, he just follows ppl the whole freaking day to minimize time loss. Doesnt matter who, I hope some one else wins the tour.
