Seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will quit Astana and form a US based team in 2010 in partnership with RadioShack Corporation.
"Lance Armstrong will compete for Team RadioShack as a cyclist, runner and triathlete in events around the world, including the 2010 Tour de France," the statement said.
The 37-year-old American is currently riding the Tour with the Kazakh-funded Astana team.
"To be able to compete for an American team comprised of the world's top cyclists, supported by the best coaches and staff - I couldn't be happier to partner with RadioShack, a truly iconic American brand," Armstrong said.
Armstrong said there had not been any decision on a co-sponsor.
"There will be other partners, other sponsors but we have not finalised yet, He said. "The usual will be Nike, Trek, maybe some others we are working on."
RadioShack is a consumer electronics company based in Texas.
An internet site for the team opened as the statement was published with a page showing pictures of Armstrong and the words: "2010. Get Ready. Team RadioShack".
The announcement was made immediately after the 18th stage of the Tour de France, won by Armstrong's Astana team mate Alberto Contador. Armstrong finished 16th.
Asked whether he would be part of the project, Contador, who leads the Tour ahead of Luxembourg's Andy Schleck and Armstrong, said: "I heard that Lance was launching a new structure. But I just want to concentrate on winning the Tour and we'll see afterwards."
Pat McQuaid, the president of the International Cycling Union said the announcement was good news for cycling.
"It's good news that a new sponsor comes into the sport. After the years we've had, it is a sign that the sport is good value for sponsors," he said.
Yet McQuaid added Team RadioShack were "a little presumptuous" in thinking they would automatically obtain a ProTour licence.
"They delivered all the necessary documents by hand on Monday like the (British) Sky team have. We have all the administrative documents plus details of most of the riders in the team.
"All this information will be assessed by our ProTour licence commission. They won't be sure to have the licence until the end of the year," he added.
McQuaid could not say who the other riders involved in the team would be but Garmin-Slipstream team chief Jonathan
Vaughters made it clear none of his would join the new outfit.
"All our riders but one will be under contract next year. That rider is faithful to the team. None of our riders will join that team," he said.
Armstrong's Astana team manager Johan Bruyneel, who led the Texan to his seven Tour wins, has made it clear in media reports this week he would be leaving the Kazakh-funded side next season.

Starting his own team! He could name it My way or the Highway. Is this the only way that Pants Egostrong can get everyone in the team to do as HE says? Re his comments following Contador's attack on a previous stage, he said that he didn't understand what C's tactics were and was "forced to bite his tongue". He seems to have forgotten that the Tour is a race and that obviously Contador wants to win it and why should he hold back when his nearest rivals are also making moves? Just rename the Tour 'The Tour de Lance' and lets have an end to his underhanded snipings. Whup his a.s.s Wiggo
will Vino stay off the juice. or will he do a DE Luca?
I'm going to start a team called 'Grimethorpe', loss alot, then get banned and 2 years later get precious about riding for my beloved 'Grimethorpe' again when its winning.
Vino will return to his team in August with Kashechkin as gregory and win Vuelta this year. I met Vino this year and told him that he should represent our Country and team as long as he can.
So I guess Vino can have 'his team' back next year.
Wonder who will be in the team.
Yeah THe Shleck brothers are a great double act

@ #73: and i guess Contador road the TTT himself too.
to #73. So Contador is in yellow without the help of the team...hmmm i remember seeing Astana riding at the front of the peleton controlling everything. I dont know which Tour you watch but i doubt it was the Tour de France.
Recently, I discovered a hot place – T a l l h u b Co m -- where many sexy tall singles who like sports and chatting there. I'm an open minded girl from UK, I also like discuss sports and love with tall guys on it.
If Astana structures the team around AC next year, designating him as sole team leader, neither Bruyneel nor Armstrong will have an opportunity to beat him. This year, without team help he has crushed his rivals. Imagine what will happen if domestiques like Kloden, Leipheimer, etc REALLY work for him.
Canadaam posts #65 #66- Some wise people have an "iron rule" which goes- "on an issue that polarises people (e.g. is Armstrong a cheat?), I'm not entitled to an opposing view unless I can argue in favour of the other side's view better than they can".
'
So when a believer that 'Armstrong is a cheat' can argue the case that he is not a cheat better than other pro Armstrongs, only then do they entitle themselves to hold that anti Armstrong view.
'
Is a tough rule, but otherwise some people just sound like blowhards.
i have the most amazing respect for lance what a guy ,what a superb bike rider, but im afraid he will not win another tdf sorry age is against him. good luck lance in your new project contador and the shleck boys though are something else........viva le tour
