Alberto Contador won the 18th stage of the Tour de France, a 40.5km time trial in Annecy, to stretch his lead on general classification to over four minutes.
The Spaniard, peerless in the mountains, was also the fastest of the peloton against the clock with a time of 48 minutes 30 seconds.
The 2007 Tour champion beat Olympic gold medallist Fabian Cancellara by three seconds and Russia's Mikhail Ignatiev by 15 with Briton Bradley Wiggins finishing in sixth in a time of 49:13 to climb two places to fourth overall.
"For me to win a time trial at the Tour, it's just huge," said Contador.
"I went out hard but thinking only to protect my place in the GC. But when I got to the first time check and saw my time it gave me a bit more belief.
"After that I just went as hard as I could to the finish. It was a crucial day for me, and I came through it far better than I expected."
The main disappointment of the day came from American Lance Armstrong, who started fast but was unable to maintain the pace and finished 16th in a stage which seemed to suit his qualities.
But the seven-time champion's performance, 1:30 off the pace, was enough to oust Frank Schleck of Luxembourg from third spot overall.
Frank Schleck's brother Andy limited the damage to retain his second place, 4:11 behind Contador.
Andy Schleck, who is not a time trial specialist, punched above his weight in the race against the clock to finish 21st at 1:45 behind Contador.
Given that he was only 15 seconds behind Armstrong, it was a positive day for the Luxemburger.
Unless Contador experiences a sensational collapse in Saturday's 20th stage when the peloton finishes on the summit of the legendary Mont Ventoux, the Spaniard is assured of winning the race.
But Andy Schleck warned: "The race is still not over. We'll be doing what we can on the Mont Ventoux."
In the overall standings, Armstrong is 5:25 adrift while Wiggins is 5:36 off the pace but two seconds ahead of Germany's Andreas Kloeden with Frank Schleck dropping to sixth at 5:59.

How can somone who is known as the best climber in the world literally overnight become a TT sensation to the point of beating a double Olympic Track pursuit Champion who can beat literally anybody on a flat 40km TT as well as an Olympic TT & multiple World TT Champ and NOT expect people to believe that his performance was assisted by artificial means???? He was already one of the numerous spanish riders' names in the Puerto investigation that the Spanish Authorities buried, plus look where he came from, ONCE under the direct leadership of Manolo Saiz!! Its only a matter of time before he tests +ve and i predict it will be when he races for his next team.
The fact he won that flat TT (with a v.small slight climb) ahead of pure TT specialists who the course favoured just proves he's using, without doubt. Look how he is on climbs when almost everyone is showing a face of pain, their zips wide open and he's barely broken a sweat, no visible signs of struggle and his zip hardly undone.
I have absolute NO confidence in him racing clean, at all and its only a matter of (short) time before he tests +ve...!
...This is just like all the Bill Belichek haters during football season....
Maxx92, you a Pats fan? I'll forgive the misspelling if so. :-)
Worldwide, how come you love to focus on Armstrong's muscles and rear? You must love watching him a lot and hate it at the same time that you cant have those. lol
Well it seems that you will be dead wrong about Armstrong being down 12 minutes after Ventoux... Hope you didn't bet your house on it mate!
COOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRR
SEAN, you need anger counseling, friend. You get waaaay too worked up over bike racing. :D Are you a frustrated junior racer???
Ahhh...to be in love...eh Richard it must feel good curling up with that pin-up of Lance you have stashed in your bed room every night. Does he light your heart's fire?
Personal attacks? Please take your moronic comments elsewhere. If you had gone back far enough to read what your fellow Lance Lover had written, you would see he completely ignored what I wrote and simply attacked..*ahem* my person, and did not offer any bit of insight whatsoever. Ofcourse, you must have been chomping at the bit just waiting to get your 2 cents in and my comment gifted you the opportunity to say your little sch peal. I know defending one's hero is of utmost importance, especially when times are tough, but you may as well just wave a white flag and find someone else's package to ogle.
Re canadaam, s/he's just trying to get a debate going, no one can genuinely feel so much ungrounded hatred.
Re Lance, generally it's awful that we have one of the greatest ever athletes still actively competing, and we get the chance to see him in action again, but so many people can't see it. I assume it must be human psychology to hate/fear (delete as appropriate) someone who's repeatedly demonstrated vastly superior physical ability, even if Lance can't reproduce it now he's almost a Vet. It must have been the same in Merckx's day, but there wasn't the internet or journalistic media coverage back then to help propagate hatred.
It's amazing how some people (like canadaam #97) can pour such hatred over a guy who has done such good for cycling and cancer suppport.
'
An anonymous guy with an internet connection can try to drag down someone who has given so much to society.
'
Canadaam- when you try to hold someone down, you hold part of yourself down with them. When you write hatred, you end up acting out angry feelings. Ultimately, your life is poorer. To try to magnify negativity in such a role model ('though not in his spouse relationships!) is plainly dumb. If you feel so strongly about drugs in cycling, drop the scorn and do something positive like joining Bike Pure.
Armstrong is awesome, just watch him next year he will be a serious contender for the tdf. Yeah he can be arrogant at times but then he has every right to be with 7 consecutive wins! To get a podium finish after 4 years away would be incredible
canadaam, take you head out of the sand. Credit to lance, he has come back into one of the worlds hardest endurance events and is holding his own. Not many people expected him to win it after 3 years out, but with a full years training and racing in him he will be back next year as a serious contender at 38 years old. he is still a remarkable athlete, and those who expected him to be at his peak still are fools, he is not far off the pace. And I though the arrogance of the French was subsiding somewhat this year and they were warming to lance. Still cheering for Wiggin's, a total surprise and a whatever he does from now on he has exceded all expectations.
Well well well Cheatstrong, once again you have been exposed. Without your blood doping program, you are nothing but a decent climber and time trialist. Unfortunately, you will still go down in history as the "winner" of seven tainted Tours. But here's a tip before next year's race. Go visit the doctor and get back to your fraudulent ways. You will never win a clean Tour de France. You're just not good enough. In reality, You know what you are without the drugs??. An American Cadel Evans. An arrogant one to boot. And I heard you say you only needed a second on either of the Schlecks before Ventoux to stay on the podium. You have over 30 on Frank, and I guarantee, those 30 seconds will be long gone before the half way mark on the mountain. Dont even bother with Andy, he is everything you'll never be. A great clean rider. Dopestrong, you'll never fool the knowledgeable fans of cycling. You are the Barry Bonds of cycling. Disgraced and shamed.
The guy is incredible, good job. You may love him, you may hate him, but he is the best.
skenderbeu17 u're right man, where Brunnel saw 1,2,3 for Astana? A dream right? And yes he also thought the Schleck's are sleeping and the Mount Ventoux is an illusion. Anywhay to be honestlly i think 2,3 are for Schleck brother's no doubt. Armstrong is very strong but not im not seeing him crack Andy and Franck in the Ventoux. Same for Wiggins.
So Sean - third place in the general classification is "tagging along" is it ? I bet your boy friend wishes you were half the man Lance Armstrong is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grow up and restrict your comments to the race and do not indulge in personal attacks on anybody.
You must be the first person to successfully build a time machine because as far as I can see you are living in the past. WHOOPS. Your Ladyboy lover Armstrong is done friend...please come back to the present like normal intelligent people. If you even bothered to read what I said (maybe you have difficulty with that, I'm not sure) I said 10 minutes come Paris...not 12 as of today you @#$%. I also never said Contador's win was impressive. He has basically been assured of victory from the get go, which is why this is a garbage tour. One team is dominating, even though they have an old geriatric tagging along with. Gidday sir...you once again FAIL
This is just like all the Bill Belichek haters during football season. As long as they are creative and not redundant (Erinoyole- that would be you), it's actually entertaining. While we're on the subject of doping though, of the top 5, only Andy Schleck has not been tied to some level of doping (Never proved of course in all cases). I have only seen Gerdemann (way back), VdV, and Wiggins actually make anti-doping statements among high level riders. Seems to me that regardless of who's been caught or not, there's still an even playing field on the roads of the tour. hasta manana
you can complaint all you want, contador is not a team player, he wrecked kloden and armstrong! Blah blah! today he showed once again he's the best! yesterday the schleck brothers were simply too strong for everyone else except him. i belive that lance is amongst the very best riders ever...but nowadays he simply cannot outpace contador, or even to try it. furthermore, contador has fair play, no way would lance allow for anything else other than total commitment from his team! the kind of support contador is getting is nothing compared to us postal or discovery teams during armstrong reign
What did Bruneel say: "don't attack but leave the Schleck brothers go. Then you wait for Kloden and Armstrong to come back". Some team manager! How did he figure 1,2, and 3 with letting the Schlecks go??! Today he would have lost the yellow, oh, because he thought his darling Armstrong will blow Andy away. Oh, that's what the other expert, Millar said, Wiggo will take 2 and a half mins from Andy, no problem. OOps! Now there's Ventoux for them. Somehow can't see any of them(LA or Wiggo) have the legs. So much for calculations done on paper! Everyone becomes an expert!
Good going today by wiggins but contador is the master.
WOW, AC!!!! Hope that your blood wont take away you thunder!!!!
