Athletics-What others are saying about sprinter Justin Gatlin

Sat, 24 Jul 19:57:00 2010

Comments about 2004 Olympic 100 metres champion Justin Gatlin's return to the sport after a four-year doping ban which ended on Saturday:

"He has fully served his suspension and is eligible to compete in any meet that wishes to invite him, and he is free to compete in any U.S., world or Olympic Championships for which he would qualify."

- Doug Logan, CEO, USA Track and Field

- - - -

"An athlete who has served his/her period of ineligibility should be fully reinstated to compete again like any other athlete subject to the WADA Code."

- Travis Tygart, CEO, U.S. Anti-Doping Agency

- - - -

"No."

- Rajne Soderberg, Stockholm organiser and president of Euro Meetings Track and Field, on whether he would ever invite Gatlin.

- - - -

"The recommendation (of Euro Meetings Track and Field) is not to invite athletes who bring disrepute to the sport or negative publicity to the meeting. Doping could be one of those reasons. It doesn't have to be just doping. That is a recommendation, we don't have a policy. We are not allowed to have a policy." "

- Soderberg

- - - -

"He's hasn't really competed in four years. That's the biggest thing, the competitive readiness. The mind-set and the sharpness. You've got to get the race rust off.

- Loren Seagrave, Gatlin coach

- - - -

"This the first step of a journey that is going to end in London. Then he will have a chance to evaluate after London whether he wants to stay for another four years."

- Seagrave
