Berlin 2009 - Rodriguez blames tactics for disqualification

Eurosport - Mon, 24 Aug 23:00:00 2009

Spain's Natalia Rodriguez has blamed a "tactical mistake" for her disqualification as the winner of the women's 1500 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

ATHLETICS 2009 NATALIA RODRIGUEZ IMAGO - 0

"I am disappointed in myself because deep down I believe I made a tactical mistake," the teary-eyed 30-year-old said as she arrived at Madrid's Barajas airport.

Rodriguez was judged by the race referee to have pushed over Ethiopian Gelete Burka down the back straight as runners jockeyed for position going into the final curve, leaving reigning world champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain to retain her crown.

Rodriguez said the hardest part of the incident was being jeered by the audience after Burka fell to the ground.

"It was very hard, I wanted to hide. I have no more tears to shed. Now I feel a bit better but last night I could not sleep. I had to go out for a walk around the city because I could not sleep," she said.

While still in Germany she sounded a more defient note, insisting in an interview with Radio Marca that she did nothing wrong and was "robbed" of her gold medal.

"It was clear that I was going to win, they robbed me (of my victory). It was the Ethiopian who closed in on me. There was a shock and she fell," she said.

Rodriguez recognized that trying to pass ahead of her rivals from the inside of the course was "very risky" but she said she felt she had not committed "any mistake".

The Spanish athletics federation have accepted the disqualification, saying it was "fair" after watching videos of the incident.

Spain's Fermin Cacho, the winner of the gold medal for the men's 1500 metres at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, also called Rodriguez's disqualification "fair".

"If we take into account the rules, it is fair. Maybe, in her desire to win, she made the mistake of pushing Burka," he said.

  1. WHAT IS MORE GRIEVOUS, A RACE INCIDENT OR A MAN RUNNING AGAINST WOMEN?
THE TRUTH IS THAT THE MAN HAS THE GOLD MEDAL, RODRIGUEZ IS CRYING FOR NOT HAVING IT.

  2. Re-run the final! Has to be the comment of someone who hasn't competed. On the occasions when I have run heats and finals, I would have been in no fit state to run another round for days. 1500m is quite physical, I remember a particularly rough ride from one John Walker at the Palace in the mid eighties. It's a very tactical event and you have to put up with it! As for reinstating of athletes after 'incidents' in the qualifying rounds, try telling that to Jim Ryun!

Rodriguez ran a poor race, when she was clearly the strongest, so to be Dq'd will hurt even more. Any athlete knows that if someone tries to come past on the inside, you don't give way to them. It was a stupid move (red mist!), but not malevolent. Burka did look frail and, unforunate though the incident was, I doubt she was on for a medal. Fair punishment, and Burka should be offered a damn good apology!

  3. P. E, what a Jealous Hating thing you are!! -How dare you speak that Mouthful way without conclusive Proof about EVERYBODY. How old are you? I guess 5 yo. Think not twice but five times what you say and get informed and the facts right. Your hatred for a particular successful nation blinds your speech and helps sh1tte for your bitterness and emotional anxiety and frustrative attempts to see your nation doing well. Sore Loser !! 2 YEARS AGO FRENCH 1500 M RUNNER MEHDI BAALA WAS ALSO DISQUALIFIED AT THE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP (OSAKA, JAPAN), FOR USING HIS HAND TO KNOCK DOWN ONE OF HIS RIVALS OUT OF THE RACE, EXACTLY AS RODRIGUEZ DID. HE WEPT BUT AT LEAST HE ADMITTED AFTER THE RACE THAT HE HAD DONE WRONG AS HE WANTED BY ALL MEANS TO GET THERE FIRST, I MEAN THE FINISH LINE.
BUT THAT RODRIGUEZ IS NO FRENCH? AND WE ALL KNOW THAT ALL SPANISH ATHLETES ARE NOTHING LESS THAN CHEATS! REMEMBER THAT MARTINEZ-SANCHEZ AT ROLLAND GARROS AGAINST SERENA WILLIAMS, ONE BALL HIT HER ON THE BREAST AND SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO LOSE THE POINT,BUT NO, SHE CLAIMED AND SWORE OVER GOD'S HEAD THAT THE BALL HIT HER RACKET, ALTHOUGH THE REPLAY FROM EVERY POSSIBLE ANGLE SHOWED OTHERWISE. SPANIARDS ARE ALL LIARS AND CHEATS, FRAUDS AND DOPED. ALL OF THEM SHOULD BE BANNED IN SPORTS: THEIR FOOTBALL TEAMS, THEIR JUDO ATHLETES, IN FACT EACH AND EVERYONE OF THEM INCLUDING THG+TESTOTERONE+GROWTH HORMONE PUMPED UP VERDASCO AND NADAL AND THE LIKES OF THEM!

  5. It wasn't her tactics that made the Ethiopian fall - it was her push. Poor tactics may have got her boxed, but nobody made her try and push a gap open to get out of trouble. No way the Ethiopian had to move over and allow her to extricate herself and possibly win the race. Some pushing is allowed in middle-distance running, but if the other athlete falls, you know you are going to get dq'd. I do agree with daveblito though - what has it got to do with the Zurich lot? She has had her punishment now. leave it at that.

  6. She pushed Burka I saw it clearly, altought she tried to pass from the inside she did a mistake. 1500m is very very tactical, she had to gain her advantage way before if she wanted to win

  7. People should give her a break . The whole thing was an unfortunate "accident " . She was only trying to protect herself from falling so she leaned on the athlete in front of her "three times " . Unfortunately the other athlete was too weak and could not support her so she fell instead . Not really !!

  9. She is not a criminal. This kind of incidents happen in almost every race. Burka was fragile and tired. She also tried to close the gap as she did on semifinals. Since she felt, now we are talking about misconduct, but in fact we cannot critisize her. I am sure she has been the most affected one, since she may have won. Why is she being banned in Zurich? How can be so permissible with so many other practices like doping and banning her for this matter?

  11. The Spaniard should have been given a 2 year ban. Because of her reckless move, Burka couldn't get a medal at all.

IAAF needs to do something to quell the violence in middle distance races. In this World Championship, in the 800/1500m races, particularly for the women, someone fell in almost every heat.

  12. Dis qualification alone will not bring any justice. In fact there must be a total re-run of the final should be made. In that re-run the disqualified athelete should not be allowed to participate. I think this would solve the agony of all the nations.

From arumairajp, on Tue 25 Aug 4:35PM
  13. She didnt deliberately push anybody, im afraid; she tried to overtake a much slower athlete where there was a bit of a gap; ok, only a bit of a gap, but she got almost level to her because there was that gap; then there was some contact, the same way as there was some contact fromn the Russian lady in the first lap; the only difference is that the Russian lady and the Spanish lady are much stronger and they didnt stumble down. We have all seen many times how an athlete goes on the inside with the same gap; Unfortunately, it was not the best decision this time, and the ethiopian athlete fell. Worse for all is that the 2 strongest athletes by a long way were not awarded their prize (please dont forget that the Spanish lady is as destroyed as the ethipian for not being able to get a medal)

Last, I would like to critisize the Zurich committe, which has just announced that they do not invite Natalia to their meeting to avoid any possible problem with the public (which is Switzerland, and not Germany) Nice piece of discrimination there, if you ask me

From daveblito, on Tue 25 Aug 2:35PM
  14. What are we discussing here? Everybody agrees about the Disqualification even the athlete begrudginly.
But to slag off the athlete for the incident is Unfair. She just tried to have some space stretching her arms as another athlet gets in the way cutting off the pace leaving you with less than a split second to think where you are going to step on next. Sure no-one should slow down in front of another athlet when overtaking but that is how happened at at some extent. Overtake yes but do not disrupt the rythm so sudden. Besides it happens all the time so it's no point in carrying on talking.

    From AndJustice4All, on Tue 25 Aug 1:31PM
  15. I think the Ethiopian should take that ugly woman to COURT. she did not delibrately push her once but, 3 times. she made sure that she knocked her down. the Ethiopian was clearly the favorite to win the GOLD. I think the other athlecs should do the same to that ugly selfish unsports man/woman stupid Rodriguez. the sports doesn`t need these kinds of cheats. she should be punished.

If she didn't fall nothong would have happend well said, bu she fell and her victory is stolen.

From Tyson, on Tue 25 Aug 9:53AM
  17. the Ethiopian was very frail too and didnt handle that slight push...if she didnt fall nobody would have cared because it happens a lot especially in the 1500 m races..nobody punished Morcelli when he caused elguerrouj's fall to deprive him of 1996 Olympics..please watch the video on youtube and see how deliberately Morceli puts his foot in front of Elguerrouj..but Morceli was the champ then and Elguerrouj was a nobody.

  18. Aww come on
She did not intentionally push her. She simply made a tactical error attacking on her inside. She misjudged the space. It could have happened to any athlete in that kind of a race.
