Britain's Lisa Dobriskey was awarded 1,500 metres silver as Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain defended her world title after Spain's Natalia Rodriguez was controversially disqualified.
Rodriguez had beaten Jamal with a sprint in the home stretch after having been involved in the fall of Ethiopian favourite Gelete Burka 250m from the finish.
The Spaniard clocked a time of four minutes 3.36 seconds with Jamal holding on to silver in 4:3.74, just one hundreth of a second ahead of Dobriskey.
But Rodriguez was later disqualified, Dobriskey was moved up to silver and American Shannon Rowbury claimed bronze.
"There was a lot of pushing in that race and I am very disappointed that Gelete fell," said Jamal, putting the blame squarely on Rodriguez.
"She was at fault. If that had not happened Gelete would have been in the top three. But it does not take away from my victory because had that girl not gone through like that I would have won (the race)."
Rodriguez and Ethiopian-born Jamal, who had run the season's best time going into the championships, raced past Burka before the final bend, with the Spaniard pushing herself through the inside lane.
Burka, in the lead at the time of her fall, came in last of the starters and collapsed in tears before being carried away with a bandaged left knee.
Rodriguez barely celebrated her win and immediately went to apologise to the stricken Ethiopian.

(CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS COMMENT) Or the 400 metres in 41 seconds if you want to argue she was sprinting. And let's not forget the Spanish girl was overtaking her, so what the Spanish girl's speed was can only be left to even wilder speculation, but it must have been something close to the speed of light.
Dear goldentouch,
please let's leave nationalities out of this discussion. Do you really believe an athlete should be given a gold medal because she was pushed 250 metres from the finish line? (Even if we assume this really is the case) This statement totally disqualifies the rest of your comment.
Dear miguel b,
"whist running at 22 miles an hour"? 35 kilometres an hour that is. Or the 1500 metres in 2 minutes and 35 seconds. Pretty impressive that is. Better go back to school and keep working on your maths.
Rodgiguez pushed Burka twice and has even admitted she was at fault. Chichoso if you really believe what you have written then you are living in cloud cuckoo land!
Burka is running through the middle of the lane, possibly trying to block the Bahrain runner, so she leaves enough space on the inside for Rodriguez to pass her. Rodriguez sees the gap and does the logical thing. Now, go on youtube and pay attention to Burka's footwork. How does she go from running through the middle of the lane to stepping a few centimetres from the edge? As she realises she's going to be passed she dives and pushes the Spaniard off the track with her HIPS. Watch the hips, that's where all the action is. Rodriguez stepped on the grass, so tough titties for her, but shame on Burka for her maneuver and for playing the victim. No way she could have won anyway.
Natalia Rodgiguez has admitted her mistake and said she should have been more patient and waited for the home straight. She saw a gap and went for it, but it closed before she got through. She lost a medal too, surely gold or silver, and is sincerely sorry she was the cause of Burqa's fall. It was a tactical mistake, that's all, not a deliberate attempt to hobble a rival as some posts suggest.
There was clearly not enough space, but even with that on the first pass she couldn't get through and she could been let off if she had not tried it again! This is different to the jostling that goes on in a tight group of runners where it's normally someone running on the one ahead's heels or runners who are running abreast of each other trying to get ahead. You cannot push people over to get through or people would just take others out all the time to get past them, this is supposed to be a professional sport, it would the same if she had tampered with a field athletes equipment in order to get ahead. And to the person who said she did it deliberately obviously does not know anything about running, if you are travelling at speed it does not take much to knock you off balance plus the dangers of falling down when people are running with spikes and at speed not lightly considered...
The spaniard was too passionate and focussed on winning and made a very bad decision, I don't think she deliberately pushed her other but it was a lack of judgement which she should have known better.
the europeans are jealous of the african long distance runners
sorry that the spanish girl is clearly at fault push BUrqa if Burqa not pushed'SHE DESERVED THE GOLD MEDAL' she will win the rase the IAAF give attention to her re-conseder tO do somthing for BURQA
goldentouch clever athletes who pay attention overtake on the inside, in the last 100m of a race watch what the average athlete out in front generally does, they drift out from the inside of the track leaving space for somebody to take advantage of, she went down really easy and it looks like she was about had it, the pack behind her cut her small lead down in a blink of an eye which probably contributed to her falling as you dont usually catch somebody up that quickly
I used to be an athlete and you never over take on the inside lane because that is where long distance races are won from , there was not an inch of space to manouver, dirty tricks do not win races i would like to see a life ban for this or at least 2 years with out competing, stepping off the track is another offence(breach) the Ethopian was the most likely winner and got ambushed enroute what a sad sad loss, she should be handed gold for the injustice she suffered where is natural justice
i am shocked and disgusted to see such ameature and cheating behaviour from ESPANOL ATHLETE, there was no room to pass on the inside lane so she proceed to push the leader out of the way and then step off the track and continue to run as if what she did was justified, IDOT BEHAVIOUR the ETHOPIAN should be given the GOLD medal because a clear message needs to be sent to all gutless cheats it dose not pay so just run a clean race
but let us remember this is a non contact Sport!!! so penalty should be severe and fitting of the breach committed
FOOTBALL-NUTZ - STICK TO YUOR FOOTBALL MATE EBCAUSE YOU KNOW BUGGER ALL ABOUT ATHLETICS - PEOPLE WHO ARE SHOVED IN THE SHOULDER BY A HAND AND SHARP ELBOW FROM THE SIDE AND BEHIND WHILST RUNNING AT 22 MILES AN HOUR DON'T GENERALLY FALL TO THE TRACK ON PURPOSE - IDIOT
I think she fell on purpose as she has seen others do it, all for attention, she wasnt going to win anyway
so sad that gelete was pushed by this spanish girl.
I can't believe this is happening to the poor girl Burka. It is obivous that she could get the gold medal. What is she thinking? i mean the spanish girl? did she think by winning this way she will be famous?well, she is wrong , now she will be know for her bad behaviour. The IAAF should something for Burka, not only disqualify the girl. Even if the race will be done again,Burka cannot do it, because she was hurt.
Well its obvious that she was pushed and the spainian gal was out of the trackin field so she desrves to be disqualified...what is very disappoinitng is that our Gal Burka from Addis was in a good shape and sprit and could have reached in the top 3 if not clinching the gold medal...all of us here in Ethiopia was devastated by the action and am sure th IAAF must do somthing for her....
She deserved to be disqualified. It wasn't normal jostling. Rodriquez used here forearm to push Burka. Then the force of her own push forced Rodriquez into the infield.
What a joke ,,,, what will happent to the poor ethiopia ,,,
SHE DESERVED THE GOLD MEDAL
MacroV, from what I saw the Spanish girl is clearly at fault. There was not enough space for her to pass on the inside and you can see that she actually ran on the infield. You can also see that she physically pushed the leader in order to pass.
I would be interested to see different replays, as the one I saw (side view) suggested to me that Rodriguez had a decent amount of space on the inside to pass. So I'm not sure that anybody was really at fault. Maybe a front view would be more enlightening.
