Southgate braced for transfer bids

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate knows he may have big decisions to make as the transfer window draws to a close.

Southgate is expecting interested parties to step up their pursuit of strikers Tuncay Sanli and Afonso Alves over the remaining week or so of the summer window, while central defenders David Wheater and Robert Huth have also been tipped to move away from The Riverside Stadium.

Tuncay has been linked with Aston Villa and German outfits Cologne and Stuttgart, while Alves is attracting interest from Holland, where he scored so freely during his time with Heerenveen.

Southgate said: "We are in a position where, at the moment, we have a very good squad.

"Like any other football club, as we have just seen at Everton, if you get offers that you think are worthwhile, then you have decisions to make. But unless that happens, we don't have a decision to make."

Asked at what point those decisions might have to be made, he said with a smile: "I would think £22million - even we might have to consider selling people at that price."

  2. Please stop this nonsense! If boro need to sell players then they should say so. It is pointless saying you want to return straight into the Premiership and then offloading the very people who can make this happen. At the end of January it may be possible but by then we will have a good idea if an instant return is possible. Southgate is already making excuses for failure. It suits him to loose key players because failure then is not his fault.

  3. plz plz dont sell tuncay!!! im beggin u southgate dont sell him!! il come and work for u if u want for free!!! just dont sell our best player!! LOL that should ought to do it. i think that tuncay is worth more than downin coz he tries his best in every game and is enthusiastic an actually scores goals so i would say atleast 18-20million for him and as for the others well practically the same. because tuncay is a international player and plays for his country he is significantly worth more. he is like the top goalscorer for turkey and can even play in goal!!!! now thats amazin x

  4. If I had been in Mark Hughes shoes I would not have bought Lescott for that amount of money I would have gone and bought either HUTH or WHEATER from Boro or even TAYLOR at Newcastle for about half that amount and had just hjas good a player and in Huth a very physical presence and leader.

However I'm glad he didn't buy either becasue we will need them in the coming months when the going gets a little tougher.

    UP THE BORO

  5. No way should we allow Huth, Wheater or Tuncay to unless we get offered silly money and by that I mean more than we got for Downing. If we sell one of the defenders it should only be Riggot or "Mad Dog". and of the forwards well no surprises for guessing who Alves for any amount would be a good deal but realistically we need a few million for him with a sell on clause just in case he comes good then we can benefit.

    UP THE BORO

  6. That's £22m each by the way!!!

  7. Would that he meant it!!! £22m for Tuncay, Huth & Wheater would either send all predetory managers running back to their stadiums or Boro would receive a healthy injection in the bank balance to spend on new players. They could even take 22p for Alves with a smile.
Seriously I hope Boro stick out for really big money or tell other clubs to p**s off. Huth and Tuncay have got to be worth approaching Lescott's fee.
