Carling Cup - Possebon leg not broken

Eurosport - Wed, 24 Sep 19:05:00 2008

Manchester United have confirmed that Rodrigo Possebon did not suffer a broken leg during their 3-1 Carling Cup win over Middlesbrough.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Carling Cup - Rodrigo Possebon, Manchester United - 0

The 19-year-old Brazilian needed oxygen on the pitch and was taken straight to hospital for further treatment following a tackle by Emanuel Pogatetz.

"He was kept in hospital overnight for observation and to assess whether there was any ligament damage to his knee," United announced on their official website.

Alex Ferguson said he hopes he never sees another tackle like it and even Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate admitted he had no complaints at the instant red card shown to Pogatetz during the second half of the match.

"You don't want to see things like that and I hope I never see anything like it again," said the United boss.

"It is such a pity for the boy and took the gloss off what was a really good performance.

"The thing that gets me about challenges like that is that the opponent always claims he has done nothing wrong.

"He [Pogatetz] should have just walked off the field. Then you get their bench screaming that it wasn't a sending off and there is nothing wrong with our player.

"At least Gareth Southgate was very good about it. He apologised and understood the gravity. It was an absolutely terrible tackle."

Southgate branded the challenge "poor" and admitted members of his bench had stepped out of line.

"A couple of lads on our bench did not have the same view as I did but that is dealt with now," he said.

"We can have no complaints about the decision. It is difficult to know why it happened.

"It was an unusual aberration for him because his discipline has improved in the last two years."

Boro never looked the same team after Pogatetz had gone off.

At that point, the Teessiders had levelled through Adam Johnson after Cristiano Ronaldo had marked his first start of the season with his first goal since the Champions League final win over Chelsea in Moscow.

And Ferguson feels the furore involving Real Madrid has is now well and truly behind the 23-year-old.

"I think Cristiano has come to accept that at this stage of his career, United is the place for him," he said.

"Southern Europeans want at some point to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, so I understood what was going on in Cristiano's mind when he declared he wanted to join Real.

"But once we had talked he accepted it was a move for the future.

"I pointed out to him how much better it would be to leave like Eric Cantona, with the fans loving and appreciating him.

"The crowd still chant Cantona's name and I told Cristiano, 'Leave a hero like Eric' and one day he will. But not yet."

Without Pogatetz, the visitors lost their shape and Ryan Giggs took advantage of Gary O'Neil's slip 11 minutes from time before Nani sealed a place in the fourth round in stoppage time.

  1. dont they teach these over paid pre madonna's how to tackle?are they scred to get dirty, whatever happend to the sliding tackle.its harder to do damage if your sliding in feet down.so many people are tackling half pulling out on the way not looking and leaving there feet in,players need to practice maybe on something like dummies ,like slide up to them ,while managers or fa officials make sure there not reckless.how man broken legs and possible careers are ruind before something is finally done

  3. This season in the Premiership we are seeing more and more HORROR TACKLES it's time the FA started handing out long term bans, but they seem to think it's right to book players for trivial things arguing with the ref etc and not to punish seriously dangerous tackles. Genuine football fans don't want thugs in their teams it's time to kick them out. Or does FA stand F ALL because thats they do beside line their pockets.

  5. ferguson = @#$%, keane = @#$% but who cares. all you plastic mancs do is whinge when something goes against you and you accidently forget what youve done in the past for instance that @#$% ronaldo's dive on sunday when lampard got within two foot of him. in response to the tackle it might be bad but try playing sunday league every week, it happens yet you get up and carry on. we dont have physios and managers pampering us. and you northerners have the front to call us southern softies .

  7. pogs is a dirty little @#$% anyway... we all know that. With his discipline record in mind the FA should come down @#$% him. There's no place for stuff like that in football. Someone said 'well it isn't bad because he didn't break his leg'... that's rubbish mate... it could of easily wrecked the lad possebon's career. Fortunately he got lucky but pogs should pay a hefty price and not get let off so easy. Same thing applies to that dirty weasle Guthrie.

"I see the old fox Ferguson has lost none of his guile, whatever the truth about the incident(I didn't see it) Ferguson always milks these incidents to get the only thing he is concerned about.... a result. Gareth Southgate demonstrated what a little boy he is trying to fill a managers shoes by falling for Ferguson's antics. Never give Ferguson any credability or he will empty you pockets."

You're some Muppet how can you make such a ridiculous statement when you have not even seen the challenge why don't you F^*K OFF and look at the challenge and the come back and make an apology.Idiots like you should be banned from this site. CLOWN

  12. I think the red card was warranted after seeing the replay over and over again. I'd prefer the whole thing didn't happen and the match ended with 11 with 11. Yes it was a bad challenge. I'm a United fan but I don't think he needs further punishment than the three match ban.

There wasn't serious intent just like the Eduaurdo incident there wasn't any intent. Both players were really unlucky and Eduardo coming worse off. I Thought Anderson should have been yellow carded for pushing Downing off the ball. Does anybody agree with me?

  15. michael.hardy11 keane was one of the best players ever in the premiership. he dominated almost every game for 5 years after 1998. i agree the haaland tackle was ridiculous. But he was pure class. whatever he lacked in skill he more than made up for with determination.
