Pedro Mendes spared Rangers' blushes with an extra-time winner against Partick to win 2-1 after the holders had looked in danger of crashing out of the CIS Cup.

Rangers had hoped for a comfortable night at Firhill when Kris Boyd opened the scoring with 25 minutes on the clock - only to be pegged back just eight minutes later by Stephen McKeown.

Despite Thistle's best efforts, it was not to be their night as Mendes claimed the decisive goal in style with 115 minutes played.

Partick lost possession, allowing DaMarcus Beasley to set up the midfielder for a swerving right-footed effort.

Stephen Ettien's extra-time winner earned Hamilton their first win over Lanarkshire rivals Motherwell for 20 years in a dramatic 2-1 victory at Fir Park.

The Frenchman struck his first goal for Accies in a derby that under-fire referee Iain Brines badly lost control of.

Brines, who has been taken off the FIFA list for 2009 after a string of controversies, issued 12 yellow cards and two reds, the first a contentious one for Chris Porter in first-half injury time.

Jamie Murphy cancelled out David Graham's opener to send the third-round match into an extra 30 minutes and former Motherwell midfielder Simon Mensing's sending-off set up a frantic finale after Ettien's strike.

A Conor Sammon double helped rampant Kilmarnock beat Aberdeen 4-2 at Rugby Park to book a place in the quarter-finals.

In an exhilarating first half which saw the Irishman notch his first competitive goals for Killie, the Ayrshire side also scored through the mesmeric David Fernandez and Mehdi Taouil from the spot.

The visitors kept in touch - but only just - through a Gary McDonald strike and a Lee Miller penalty.

  7. boyds goal was a peach but he and novo for the rest of the match were shocking, novo alone could have had 4 or 5! a poor performance from the gers and the jags deserved to get it penalties at least. but like billy dodds said said at half time, it might take a mistake to win the game and it did, that along with mendes' strike.
