Alberto Contador, who won the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday, hinted he may quit the Astana team if it hires Lance Armstrong.
The veteran has announced he is coming out of retirement to seek a record eighth Tour de France title.
The Spaniard was asked by sports newspaper As how he would feel if the American joins Astana.
"It would be quite complicated. I think I've earned the right to be the leader of a team without having to fight for it," he said.
"And with Armstrong, there could be difficult situations in which the team would put him first and that would harm me."
The 37-year-old Armstrong has rocked the world of cycling by planning an audacious comeback with a view to winning a record eighth Tour de France next summer.
Astana boss Joahn Bruyneel, who managed Armstrong as director of the US Postal and Discovery Channel teams, said recently he would "not allow" the American to join another team.
But Contador said he may quit the Kazakh-backed, Luxembourg-based team if it hires the American, who is set to return at January's Tour Down Under in Australia.
"I will base my decision on what he says," the Spaniard said. "I intend to stay because I am under contract until 2010, but I have received a good many offers from other teams.
"Bruyneel believes I can deliver results, but it can't be denied that he made his name because of his ties to Armstrong."
Contador won the Vuelta on Sunday to add to his victories in the 2007 Tour de France winner and this year's Giro d'Italia.
He is now only the fifth rider in history, and the first ever Spaniard, to win all three of cycling's three-week Tours.
His comments to As contrast with those he made immediately after Armstrong's announcement.
"I would welcome [Armstrong] into the team with open arms because a cyclist like him would fit in anywhere," Contador said two weeks before.
"I have always had the highest regard for him and would be delighted to be in the same team as him."

Levi always drive behind Contador on Vuelta, ecxept in 13 stage when he drive Contador 2km. I love Armstrong but i love Contador more, i'm be glad if Contador changing team and Armstrong had no right to join Astana team and be the leader. Contador is only 25 years old, in best years for cyclist, (CSC will not exist next year) and he won all 3 major tours. TDF 2009 is going to win Contador, he's the only cyclist who could won all 3 grand tours in the same year
One more thing Pereiro won by default so arguably I don't consider him a true Tour champion.
I have always treated Spanish riders with the utmost respect when I post on here I have never said anything bad about Spanish riders. But now you guy's from Spain have talked enough pile. First people who support Spaniard rider's should not say anything about doping being as though a bunch of your cyclists have been up to their waist in it over the last 20 years. Second Alberto won the Tour De France by default he could not have beaten Rasmussen I don't care what kind of drug's the kid was on he should have beat him if he is the best. Armstrong has arguably been beating doper's for years. Enough said.
Armstrong will always demand 100% from all his team mates so there is no way Contador should stay in the same team.
What a great Tour it could be next year if they are both in separate teams with Andy Schleck in the fight as well!
just think, levi worked for alberto the entire race and without time bonuses contador and levi would have had the same time. if the last time trial was just 15 kilometers longer mr levi most certainly would have one. lance will beat alberto reguardless of what team either one are on. take care alberto and we hope to see you in 2010.
as much as i like lance,i feel that bruneyl is behaving like a love sick teenager, contador will end up as lances lieutenant, lance isnt coming back to support contador but to win the tour again and as a spectator would be better if contador left, perhaps euskatel where he'd have good support.Once next years tour has finished and lance retires again bruneyl will be saying 'i love you the most really alberto'!!!!
Alberto should show some cojones and beat Lance if, or more likely, when they are teamed up together and send Lance into deserved retirement. For good this time. Alberto is one hell of a rider but does not come even close to the good old Lance. I tell you, if the last ITT at the Vuelta had been a flat 40-odd kilometer one, Levi would have won it altogether and I reckon senor Contador is kinda frightened of what might happen if Mr. Livestrong is 100% prepared and pumped up. But he should not be, or should he?? Dunno
i hope he stays but i can see things being awquard with lance because both hav hopes of winning the tour. I think though that atm conti is better because lance has been out for 4 years, although armstrong was proberly better than contador in the past u hav 2 consider he is older now and it will be amazing if he can win the tour agin simply because he has not been envolved in racing for 4 years while contador has proven he is the rier to beat. I think astana have made a deal with armstrong but i think they may regret it if conti leaves
Bruyneel should stick with Contador. With his youth , he has the ability to go on and win more than Armstrong. He's already gone one better than Armstrong by winning 3 grand tours. No offence to Armstrong. He's a great rider, and Bruyneel will probably go with Armstrong next year, of that its already a done deal, i'm sure.

Geezz...Alberto.....show some class. So Levi dared to finish a close second and if you had flopped in the TT he would have won.
Well ***Duh and no Sh**T, Sherlock!!!***, Alberto. He would have been better than you and therefore would have deserved to win the Vuelta!!!
***No gifts, Alberto!!!*** You want it, you have to actually beat the other guy fair and square. And guess what, Alberto, I'll bet it will be a cold day in H**LL befor Levi busts his butt again for you. You obviouly missed taking the class: "How to motivate people to work for you 101".
Heck..I'll even root for Cadel over Contador now that he has shown his true colors. Three grand Tours..(one given because the golden jersey was kicked out) and a Giro and a Vuelta doesn't even come close to winning **7 straight TdFs**. Lance is a true great. Conta is till a wanna be compared to that record. Geezz ...Alberto ..show some respect and get some *class*!!!! I look forward to you leaving Astana and Johan's team wiping up the floor with you..you ungrateful little twit.
LIVESTRONG... FOREVER!
no bragging but I did say that following conversations I heard on sunday that it was going this way. There is no way Lance would not come back unless he had trek bikes & Johann Bruyneel.
I rest my case
Armstrong has no right to take the Contador's place at Astana , Contador u are the besttttttttt
And the Andy Millman award goes to . . . Alberto Contador! Nice to remember the little people. If you consider Levi's palmares "little". Alberto, you bus is waiting.
Yep Bert, if Armstromg joins you should walk! No way should you ever play second fiddle to anyone!
I simply cannot believe that Armstrong hasn't already done his deal and that Bruyneel wouldn't have discussed it with Bert and Levi?
Astana hopeful? What? If he's announcing it tomorrow they already know surely!? He can't go to a press conference and say I'm signing for Astana but this is the first they know of it?
What the hell is he up to?
At this rate I'll be selling my Trek's and buying whatever bike Bert ends up riding...
Contador deserves a team for himself armstrong is jealous about Contador glory, he thought none will appear in the next 20 years, he knows that his name is not in the news anymore so he must cameback and have contador to work for him, but Contador have the right decision quit Astana and fight with Armstrong in any other team, Armstrong win because everyhing is about him, those times are over he now needs to prove than he can beat real fighters like Contador and Andy Scheleck, of course brunniel wants Contador to work for Armstrong bad excuse to cameback and yes i dont believe in the good intentions of Armstrong to cameback for the tour de france he wants glory just like every body else
Whats up with Alberto bad mouthing Levi? Levi did alot of work to help him win the Veulta, which he could have won himself. To think that Levi should have been further down on GC, what is Levi supposed to do, throw the time trials?? If they were slightly longer Levi would have won the race while supporting the whiner. Alberto's head has gotten way too big now, he forgets how important a good team is to win the grand tours. I lost alot of respect for his trash talking of Levi, I really don't care where he goes, CSC is the only team that he could win the tour on. No other team would be able to help. I don't think the Schleck are going to like that either. Astana could win the tour again without Alberto or Lance, so let him go, bye bye.
Good on you Alberto, you are doing the right thing. Take Armstrong on, lets see how good he is. Armstrong cannot rely on other riders being scared of him anymore. There is too much young talent out there and Riis will not allow the Schlecks to be intimidated by Lance like Basso was.
Contador can take him on head to head and win, same goes for Basso if he is allowed to ride.
I wouldnt be suprised is more riders quit. Armstrong is only happy if everything is about him. There's no way that he would work for anyone else in a major tour. Personaly I wouldnt want to ride with him either.
no, he's afraid that the team that was set up to support him will now be directed to support someone else, and that he'll be asked to support a 37 year old rider.
contador should call CSC and tell them he can replace sastre on the roster and never look back.....
