Premier League - Foreign owners get thumbs down

Eurosport - Wed, 24 Sep 15:26:00 2008

Billionaire foreign owners are not beneficial to the Premier League, according to a slight majority of eurosport.yahoo.com readers.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Premier League New Manchester City chairman Khaldoon al-Murbak with former owner Thaksin Shinawatra - 0

With Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover of Manchester City now complete, the number of foreign owners of Premier League clubs has risen to seven.

But the vast riches such owners bring to the English top flight are not universally regarded as a "good thing".

The main source of worry is foreign owners' supposed lack of understanding of the game. They may be able to dominate the transfer market but fears remain that they treat the players and the club merely as expensive playthings.

Out of nearly 10,000 readers who voted in our online poll, 54 percent responded negatively to the question "are billionaire foreign owners good for the Premier League".

But with 46 percent of the poll agreeing that the likes of Roman Abramovich and Malcolm Glazer can bring some benefit to the league, the results of the poll have proved to be far from conclusive.

  1. The rule is simple. If the foreigner makes the team win, that team's fans think it is a good thing. If they win nothing, it is deemed bad. Naturally, that changes as the club results and records change too.
My point of view is simple: I think EPL is now nothing but a circus. I was enjoying EPL before it became the richest championship in the world and I don't see any improvement in that sense. So can someone tell me what is good in having a foreigner owner?

  2. The money that these "Foriegners" bring in has helped the raise the standard of football in the EPL. The EPL has now become the most competitive and best league in the world. so why are we complaining?

  3. Personally, I dont think their is anything wrong with any foreign owners as long as the club breaks even, through the operating of the business side the club. If the club needs a slight injection of cash so be it but not indecent amounts of money that are being splashed about. Look at what Real Madrid did with Golden Balls.

We as mere mortals cut our cloth according to the length required. Meaning we spend what income we have.

Pity clubs didnt work that way. This is not just an EPL disease but covers all Europe and possibly everywhere else.

Maybe Platini should focus his attention on leagues in this way instead of getting his knickers in a twist over things that dont matter.

  4. Reading the Club owners rated, the title of the story is a contradiction. It appears the British owners are more of the problem. Owners with less money who also like to run the teams

  5. Mate I mean to slag nobody off and if that is your conclusion may I suggest attending some more english classes. Anyway I love how supporters love to hate other supporters but you should keep your enthusiasm for the derby games. In real life people tend to prefer to act civilized. I respect all what english teams have achieved and that final I was talking about was an example of good old fashioned commitment and passion that the true great teams of english football have in abundance. And yes, Man United are one of them, at least in my oppinion.

  7. why does bogus5 slag liverpool off, cant take the defeat you had at anfield like all Manc Scum you are a bad loser....in past seasons liverpool were just not good enough thats all....its alright getting all the star players in the world but that doesnt mean you will win everything that was proved by Chelsea's downfall last season when they said they wanted the four trophies....I think its good for football that all these people put their money into football,it just proves how big the game is all over the world and makes the premiership harder to win...Man utd and Chelsea bought a couple of league titles with spending 26-30 million on 1 player like Tevez,Stam,Shevchenko,Drogba,Berbatov,......before last season liverpools record signing was Cisse at around 14 million yet they still won the champions league....and not by luck either to be 1-0 down and win in the final 2 minutes of a champions league final thats luck.....that was against Bayern Munich what about that lucky night Mancs seem to forget that ...but when Liverpool were down 3-0 and won thats lucky? NO we just didnt give in we played and dug in till the end and didnt need Milan to take off their strikers like Bayern munich did that night or do you not remember that either..If a football team with good ability wants anything that bad they can win anything its just belief and now Man City will come into the mix in the next few years with a good team...thats life...the premiership is now the best league in the world...lets keep it that way....

  8. "Here we go again nothing but pure jealousy",
Not too much was said or made of Abramovich's millions when he stepped into plough his mega bucks into Chelsea who at the time were nothing more than a mediocre mid-table club going absolutely nowhere fast.
LIstening and reading the utter @#$% that has been posted and the media reports by such Hypocrites as Wenger,Benitez and especially Taggart the Mune makes me smile at their sheer envy, they could all do with keeping their big fat noses & gob's out of other peoples affairs and try a little harder into keeping their own houses in check.
Its understandable that the fans of these supposedly Big four famous clubs and a few others are totally distraught and bewildered at the very thought that a new kid has arrived on the block with unlimited backing and the clout to take away all their former Glories, well my fairweathered friends the fact of this little matter is that it's going to happen wether you like it or not and it is going to continue to happen for a long-long time to come.

    What's that chant again????
"cITY!!, cITY!!, The Best Team In The Land And All The World!!"

  10. re Comment 6 The reason fergie complained about the lack of support is down to the fact that united under the Glaizers have priced your local supporters out of being able to go to the match this was not the case before the takeover of your club when ticket prices were at a reasonable price

  11. The English top flight was already (for a couple of years actualy) more or less officialy labeled the best football league in the world. Why? Not because Man United won the Champions League last year and not because, two years ago, the semi-finals were an almost all-english affair. Not even the epic and fortunate victory of Liverpool from a couple of years back against what then was an unbelievable AC Milan is to 'blame'. Although, each and every one' s of these facts played their part. The reason is the whole 'air' of english football. The passion and the commitment of players. Most of whom are eyed all the time by every football team on the planet. But who still professionaly play and, truthfully, run theyr hearts out for the colours that they wear and represent. If the quality of the game is to rise who is there to say this is a bad thing? But if you want legends, like Giggsy, Carragher or even Terry you' ve got another thing comming. Say goodbye to fairy-tales and say hello to hard-cold buisness. Remember why Fergie was complaining last season about? The support United' s own fans gave them throught the tough times was a put in question then. Now, I realise it wasn' t that.. it was just the multitude of suits in the stands, that couldn' t sing or chant or scream of the top of their lungs because theyr ties wouldn' t let them and neighter theyr portraied 'images'. Wait until Anfield will be torn down and another new shinny new empty stadium will arise. It' s all going to hell. And worst part of this is that the game itself will lose in appeal and beauty.

  12. You need players to win something and I mean really good players. Not all players can be lured by mind boggling wages =/ and go to a club that they've never heard of.

  16. if billionares want to take over a club, why the premier league?? if they want a real challenge try buying into a lower league side like rotherham utd or luton, that would upset the prem teams...lol
