Championship - Southgate has money to spend

Steve Gibson has handed Middlesbrough a boost by confirming Gareth Southgate has funds available to enter the transfer market.

Boro sold star names Robert Huth, Tuncay, Stewart Downing and Afonso Alves following their relegation to the Championship and this has eased the financial worries on Teesside.

Southgate has added to his ranks with the loan captures of Sean St Ledger and Caleb Folan and there could well be further signings in the January transfer window.

"We're in a position now to reinvest in the squad and let's put it into context, we are a very well resourced Championship club," Boro chairman Gibson told the Evening Gazette. "So in terms of resource, we can compete with anything in this league.

"Maybe Newcastle are double what we are in terms of income, but other than Newcastle, we can compete with anybody in this league."
