Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could go head to head in next year's Davis Cup after Spain were drawn to face Switzerland in the first round of the World Group.
The Czech Republic, who will meet Spain in this year's final of the team event, face Belgium while India, back in the elite 16-strong World Group for the first since 1998, have been handed a tough opener in Russia.
Argentina travel to Sweden while the United States have been drawn away to Serbia. Israel, beaten by Spain in the semi-finals last week, tackle Chile.
Federer recovered from his shock defeat against Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open final to win both his singles in Switzerland's 3-2 defeat of Italy in a World Group play-off last weekend.
The 15-times Grand Slam champion has never met Nadal in Davis Cup action and the prospect of facing the Mallorcan in Spain could persuade Federer to make himself available for the first round in March.
Neither he nor Nadal played in the first round tie between the nations in 2007 when Spain won 3-2.
"I truly enjoy playing for my country but I'll also have to see where I have my priorities for next season," Federer said after victory over Italy.
"Of course, there are the Grand Slams but there is also number one, which is a bit of a dilemma. Like in the other years, I will see after the Australian Open how I feel and if I play the first round."
Waiting in round two for the winners of the tie will be either Germany or France. The World Group first round is from March 5-7.
World Group draw
Spain v Switzerland
Germany v France
Russia v India
Argentina v Sweden
Ecuador v Croatia
Serbia v United States
Chile v Israel
Belgium v Czech Republic

That would be a hell of a matchup for a Davis Cup match! But it probably won't happen.
Jayceon, you're stupid. It's no joke, you really are. Roger 'The King' Federer pulling out for a beaten-up, injured Nadal? Are you fuc*ing kidding us? If anyone should be scared, it's Nadal. Yeah, it's not because the greatest player had a bad match in the US Open final that it will end the roll he was on. He's too good to let that happen.
Time after time, Roger has showed that he made better decisions than Nadal. Nadal exhausted the @#$% out of himself that it was obvious he was gonna get injured sooner or later. He decided to play very tournament he possibly could to try and show off and knock Roger off. Didn't work, did it? He got injured pretty bad and it took Roger 3 tournaments (a masters, 2 GSs) to get back his #1 crown. Roger has always managed to stay healthy and injury-free as much as he could. Another reason why he's the best player to have ever touched a tennis racket.
LONG LIVE KING ROGER.
bodoh punya nadal!!!!!!!!!!!!! fed my boyfreind he must winnnn!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE MOST LIKELY THING TO HAPPEN IS THAT NONE OF THEM WILL PLAY, SO WHO CARES?
Perhaps it would be smarter for Nadal to become a pure claycourt player. He can pick up enough points from claycourt tournaments to stay at #2 and probably win the French 3 more times to beat Borg's record.
I would be more suspicious if Nadal isn't the main worry as it concerns the first Davis cup round. Should he not recover fully from his serious injuries until prior to the AO then I would be doubtful to see him playing non-important first round. He now has to face his biggest crisis of his career when due to ongoing health problems he is not capable of defeating top players. All his matches against top ranked aces have been disastrous beginning with Delpotro in Montreal ending with the same Delpotro in New York even in a worst way.
no.24 is another idiot who can't even know how to read as I explained why Spain plays at home in couple of posts below.Ridiculous.
Certainly every match between these two icons is a hell-of-a-show but on the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if they both withdraw from the first round which is not important to them. Furthemore, for Nadal the bad times are coming as for his health. Shortly after he got over the FO injury he got problems with his abdominal. We will be lucky to see him playing fit this year and I couldn't be too far from the truth if the guy pulled off the rest of the season. If his injuries are not healed until the last two masters and the London event he shouldn't dare to even go there. I really recommend him to stay off until AO next year.
Should be a great match but i dont see Roger gunning for that
the draw has to be fixed because every time i see davis cup matches spain are always at home{except final} i would love to take them off clay and see how rafa deals with federer on indoor hard courts
Jayceon Taylor
yes i am not perfect in english because it isn't my first language but i suspect that you can say one word in my language :) .i am so amazed to see you arguing with me about my spelling not tennis :) .
read again what you wrote not me and you will see that you are the one who ..... lost it .
you said Federer is afraid from Nadal as i can see in your comment .but if you see in my comment that i am agreeing with you from my bad english ,i'll be so sorry .if not so the problem in you not understanding english but "understanding "
Federer to quit playing after AO,, and that is a shame, cuz he is the best ever

Menno,it's got nothing to do with luck or being a champion.Ties are played depending on the last time those two countries are played against each other. The last time Spain and Switzerland played was in Swizterland,so this time,it will be in Spain.Simple as that.
more hate from the demented shoe bomber.
Fed playing a best-of-5 on clay against Nadal will be good preparation for the French.
Also, this will be the 4th consequetive time that Spain gets to play their match on home turf. Are they just incredibly lucky or is it the advantage of being the champion?
woww,it's really amazing how even this news can turn into a Rafa or Roger bashing thread!
Jayceon with the time of the world making many accounts to make thumbs down...your spaniard is nothing more than a whipping boy for DelPo.. 6-2 6-2 6-2 absorb it my friend.
well even though I wanna see Roger vs Rafa playing in Davis Cup,I don't wanna see Rafa play each and every tournament again and get injured.I hope he will select his tournaments wisely next year.
we all know whos withrawing from tournaments and running scared, these days.
pity jayceon taylor suffers from selective amnesia.
This result of this match will no doubt boil down to the surface.
