Premier League - Paper Round: Sol snapped

Eurosport - Thu, 24 Sep 13:16:00 2009

Sol Campbell finds himself in the spotlight once again, just 24 hours after walking out on Notts County.

2009-2010 Notts County Sol Campbell - 0

A £1 million-a-year deal was clearly not enough to get booted around the park in League Two, but it seems the change of heart was swift as The Sun have got their hands on a Meadow Lane team photo, with Campbell in it, taken - so they claim - a matter of minutes before he turned his back on the Magpies.

All we can say is, let's hope the photographer is pretty good with the airbrush!

There are pictures of Sol sat outside a London cafe on Wednesday morning with telephone glued to his ear. Maybe he's been trying to fix himself up with a new club.

Spurs are unlikely to offer Campbell a lifeline, as Harry Redknapp writes in his column in The Sun that "it ain't going to happen".

Andy Cole has leapt to the defence of Campbell, with the striker writing in his Independent column that his pal left Meadow Lane because of "unkept promises".

Danny Welbeck proved to be a bolt out of the blue for Manchester United on Wednesday, a Usain Bolt out of the blue that is (sorry, but it had to be done). Welbeck netted United's winner against Wolves and produced a celebration that a host of papers claim was copied from the Jamaican sprint sensation.

Joe Cole was all smiles after making his long-awaited comeback for Chelsea on Wednesday. After playing 90 minutes against QPR, he said: "I know it was only the Carling Cup but is was one of the biggest games of my career. It has been a long wait and it's beautiful to be playing again."

The Old Trafford clock continues to be the talk of the town and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is baffled by the referees' calculations for working out stoppage time. "I've given up working out how the referee and fourth official work out added time. I'm sure there is method in their madness."

A 4-0 slugging at home to Everton in the Carling Cup makes grim reading for Hull, so much so that a smattering of papers claim Phil Brown may have only four games to save his job. This is the Phil Brown who guided Hull to the Premier League and duly kept them in it. How quickly things change in football.

Straight talking from Robert Green. He is not happy with West Ham's efforts of late and said: "I think we're getting above ourselves, thinking we are better than we are at the moment."

Peter Crouch helped himself to a hat-trick in Tottenham's romp at Preston and Harry Redknapp admits he now has a welcome headache. "That hat-trick will do him the world of good and he's given me a problem - the sort of problem I like."

Craig Bellamy came to the attention of the world and his wife at the weekend, both for his goals and his actions in confronting a fan. The Sun's headline reads 'Danny has dig at 'Crazy' Bel'.

"Craig Bellamy slapping a fan was crazy," says Danny Murphy. "If he was confronted directly then it is only normal to defend yourself, but the fact that the stewards had hold of him made his actions unreasonable."

A decent story and we'd normally lavish praise on the boys from Wapping for getting hold of the Fulham midfielder. We won't though, seen as the quotes come direct from Murphy's weekly blog on Eurosport-Yahoo!

Now we've seen Middlesbrough's David Wheater plod around the Riverside on numerous occasions, prompting a number of thoughts to enter our head. One thought that has never entered our head is 'sacred cow.' But that's what the defender has been described as by Boro chairman Steve Gibson.

Transfer tale of the day goes to The Mirror's Football Spy column. The headline 'Juve eye Cahill swoop' had us nodding in agreement. 'He's a good player that Tim Cahill,' says Eurosport-Yahoo! How wrong we are as the player in question is Bolton defender Gary Cahill who has reportedly come across Juve's radar after glowing praise from Fabio Capello.

Arsene Wenger has come under fire from French champions Bordeaux over his pursuit of Marouane Chamakh. "What I do not like in the behaviour of Arsene Wenger is that he declared his interest in Chamakh a long time before calling me," Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud is quoted as saying in the Express.

"Now Mr Wenger is again starting to put doubts in the player's mind. I don't find that very correct."

  4. So how does he walk away from this, surely he signed a contract, or are football contracts just toilet paper? These players seem just to be able to either conjure a move for the oddest of reasons, after signing improved terms or just walk away because they feel like it.
