Former World Cup winner Nicole Hosp had to be carried away by helicopter after tearing knee ligaments in the season's opening giant slalom in Solden.
Hosp, the 2007 overall winner from Austria, crashed on the morning's first run and was later placed on a stretcher and flown by helicopter to the bottom of the piste.
"I fell backwards and twisted my knee," Hosp said at the finish before being taken to hospital in Innsbruck. "I felt a pain like someone had stabbed me."
Austrian team spokesman Manfred Kimmel later confirmed fears that Hosp had torn her right knee ligaments.
Hosp, who was also giant slalom world champion in 2007, missed most of last season after injuring her other knee in training in Zagreb in January.
Hosp, who will turn 26 next month, has won 11 World Cup.
