Premier League - Hull and Pompey in bore draw

Eurosport - Sat, 24 Oct 17:07:00 2009

Hull City and Portsmouth remain in the relegation zone after playing out a drab 0-0 draw at the KC Stadium.

Chances were few and far between in a match that will do little to persuade the doubters that these two sides are anything but prime relegation candidates.

Portsmouth had the better chances in the match but the contest looked destined to finish 0-0 long before the final whistle.

The home fans, who were very quiet throughout, were perhaps at their noisiest in the 75th minute when they chanted "you don't know what you are doing" to Phil Brown after he took off the industrious Stephen Hunt.

Hull were expected to finally give record signing Jimmy Bullard a home debut but the former Fulham man was ruled out after picking up a shin injury in a reserve game on Tuesday.

It was almost a disastrous start for the hosts as a mix-up at the back let Tommy Smith clear after just two minutes but the former Watford man dragged a poor shot wide.

Hull had lots of possession in the opening period but could not force David James into a single meaningful save and indeed it was Smith again who came closest before the end of the half but he scuffed an effort into the dirt after turning Paul McShane well.

The second-half was little better but James got a chance to show his quality in the 57th minute as he raced out to strip Geovanni of the ball when he could have easily given away a penalty.

After that Portsmouth enjoyed a decent spell of pressure and Aruna Dindane had two chances within a couple of seconds of each other. His first effort was blocked by Boaz Myhill (pictured) and then he fired the rebound on target but it was inadvertently blocked by his own man Younes Kaboul.

Moments after that chance Hassan Yebda got on the end of a Kevin Prince Boateng cross but his slight touch was well dealt with by Myhill.

After that brief little spell the excitement soon dried up again as Portsmouth began to sit back, comfortable in the knowledge that Hull were struggling to create anything.

The hosts then almost shot themselves in the foot in the final minute when Myhill spilt the ball on the edge of the area forcing him to foul Boateng.

That gave Jamie O'Hara a chance to win it with a free-kick in a central position on the edge of the penalty area but the loanee from Tottenham fired tamely over with a poor effort that summed up the match.

  10. even steve jordan's deserted us!!!

City fans booing Richard Garcia, what a disgrace. It made yourselves look bad, and imagine how he felt? Do you he'll improve as a player if you boo and make him feel bad?! How would you like it? I agree, I wouldn't have put him on, but only because he wasn't fit-he said that himself.
As for Brown and Duffen- it's time to go. In an ideal world, Strachen would come and we could get a chairman that actually cares about football, cares about hull as a place and actually spends money. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to happen. As it is, I think Ashbee would make a good player-manager (for however long he plays), I don't think Brian Horton's up to it.

Brown is wrecking his own career. If he goes now he'll be a championship manager, he'll be the guy who got hull promoted. If he goes at the end of the season, he'll be the guy who killed hull city and got them relegated.
He's also being selfish, it's great for hull to have a premiership club, him leaving's her only hope!
