Premier League - Poll: Goal of the weekend

Eurosport - Fri, 23 Oct 18:24:00 2009

Andrei Arshavin's strike against Birmingham won our reader poll to determine the best goal from last weekend's Premier League action.

2009-10 Premier League Arsenal's Andrei Arshavin against Birmingham - 0

FIRST PLACE: Andrei Arshavin - Arsenal 3-1 Birmingham City - 37%

Birmingham's defenders, already 2-1 down with five minutes to play, made the grave error of backing away from Arsenal's mercurial Russian. That was invitation enough for Arshavin to check on to his right foot and curl a lethal low shot past Joe Hart. While the goal was not the most visually arresting, it was the consummate ease with which he scored that made it so impressive.

SECOND PLACE: Antonio Valencia - Manchester United 2-1 Bolton Wanderers - 28%

The Ecuadorean finally opened his account for United at the 12th attempt, and in some style. After breaking into the Bolton box, Valencia played a slick one-two with Gary Neville before firing in at the near post. That's right - a slick one-two with Gary Neville.

THIRD PLACE: Robin van Persie - Arsenal 3-1 Birmingham City- 20%

Van Persie's opener against Birmingham was another exhibition of pure technique when Alex Song found the Dutchman out on the left. Denis Bergkamp's heir apparent beat Stephen Carr - making him look just like a man who started the year in retirement - before drilling a clinical low strike across the face of goal and into the far corner.

Also rans:

Robbie Blake - Blackburn Rovers 3-2 Burnley - 7%

Kevin Prince Boateng - Portsmouth 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur - 4%

Pascal Chimbonda - Blackburn Rovers 3-2 Burnley - 2%

David Dunn - Blackburn Rovers 3-2 Burnley - 2%

  2. COMMENT 9..WHICH GAME WERE YOU WATCHING? HOW CAN YOU SAY "THE BEECH BALL HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GOAL"..OF COURSE IT DID. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH YOU HAVE ONE RULE TO SUIT YOUR TEAM, AND ANOTHER RULE TO SUIT THE OPPOSING SUPPORTERS..I REPEAT, THE LAD WHO THREW THE BALL ONTO THE PITCH IS A GUILTY AS ANYONE ELSE THROWING OTHER OBJECTS DURING PLAY. OR A PLAYER "THROWING HIMSELF" INTO A SO CALLED SUPPORTER FOR ABUSE "ERIC CANTANA" COMES TO MIND...THE REF WAS BANNISHED TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP, SO THE FA AGREE WITH ME. CHEER UP.

Esther.Melvyn............... OUCH............................ I don't think the BEECH ball had nothing to do with the goal. And banning the Liverpool fan from the Stadium of Light, or any other stadium wouldnt make no difference at all. I don't mind him coming to the Emirates on Tuesday and do the same anyways. And by the way, do you remember the Joe Hart, City Balloons incident.................. no difference.

  10. INTERESTING TO KNOW IF THE FA WILL BRING CHARGES AGAINST THE LAD WHO'S ACTION OF THROWING A FOREIGN OBJECT ONTO THE PITCH DURING PLAY RESULTED IN A GOAL BEING ALLOWED WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE CLEARLY BEEN DIS-ALLOWED. ACTIONS ARE TAKEN AGAINST PERSON OR PERSONS WHEN THEY THROW COINS OR OTHER OBJECTS ONTO THE PITCH. THE DIFFERFENCE BETWEEN A HARD OBJECT LIKELY TO INJURE AND A SO CALLED SOFT OBJECT IE THE BEECH BALL, WHICH DID NOT INJURE BUT CONTRIBUTED TO A GOAL AND 3 POINTS, MAKES KNOW DIFFERENCE. THE LAD SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE GROUND,. THE REF IN QUESTIO BEEN PUNISHED..END OF..
