Hibs aim to upset Old Firm

Sat, 24 Oct 13:34:41 2009

Hibernian would be doing the entire Clydesdale Bank Premier League a favour if they managed to split the Old Firm this season, according to defender Ian Murray.

Hibs travel to Rangers on Saturday knowing victory would take them top of the table at least until Sunday amid talk they will never have a better chance of winning at Ibrox.

"I think we all look to get into that elite group," Murray said. "It's normally Rangers, Celtic, who are always up there challenging each other."

He added: "If one of us can maybe get ourselves amongst it - like Hearts did a couple of years ago - it would be great; not just for the team that gets there, but for the rest of the teams in the league, to show that it can be done.

"We can talk about it every day and for the next two or three years. If nobody does it, it'll be the same old story."

Having spent two years at Rangers in between his two spells at Hibs, Murray knows the post-mortem into Tuesday night's 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Unirea Urziceni will have been long and painful.

"It was a poor result; I think everybody knows that," he said.

"This is the time where you'll see who the real leaders are in the Rangers team. I would say they're missing Barry Ferguson.

"But there's a chance for others now to step up to the plate and I'm sure they will."

  1. Hibees for the league, St Johnstone for the cup and Scotland for the world cup !! All dreams folks. At least until the SPL is made larger so Rangers and Celtic cant beat the lesser teams 3 or 4 times a season.Restructure is the only way forward for Scottish football no doubt about it.None of this running away to the English leagues pee-ash, lets make Scottish football the priority eh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. inverkenny i slag them off this season because just about every match they've gone down a goal in the first quarter of an hour and they don't seem to really care.

  4. Can I just say the way to win games is to score goals. You dont need to be any older than 7 to realise that. Any wee boy with a ball at his feet will tell you that.
Its time the forwards/midfielders put in a decent shift for their wages.
The lack of crowds at games this season tells the complete story whether Celts are playing good football or not.
I didn't renew my season ticket this year and dont even watch them on telly any more.
Time for a clearout boys !

  5. stuart, Celtic are not bigoted, you obviously have no idea, and seaniebhoy, why do people keep slating the Celtic defence when their record is as good as any Celtic defence that went before them, i know it pains Celtic fans to say it, but Maloney, McGeady and MacDonald are woeful excuses for footballers, and their record is far worse than previous strikers, go find out McGeady's goal average per season, it's shocking for someone the Celtic fans seem to think the sun shines out his fat arse, get rid of all the forwards in January and get footballers in.

  6. Celtic need to completely reinvent themselves and they can start by getting rid of useless expenses like: Caldwell, McManus, Naylor, Kennedy, Robson, Samaras, and everyone else thats taking out more than putting in. We should bring in younger and cheaper players like McGinn who actually want to play and win rather than the dross we have now who just pick up a paycheck and wish they were playing in England. Mogga out of Europe, out of top spot and looking more and more like he's out of ideas.

  7. I would love Hibs or any other team to win the SPL. It's boring seeing 2 bigoted filled teams battle for the league season after season, decade after decade.
