We must raise our game - Wilson

Sat, 24 Oct 13:34:41 2009

Celtic full-back Mark Wilson accepts Tony Mowbray was right to warn his players over their futures following the 1-0 Europa League defeat by Hamburg.

Mowbray admitted he had to improve the quality of his squad after he suffered his third European home defeat. Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney and Scott McDonald had the best first-half chances but Celtic were sloppy in possession and they looked a beaten team after Marcus Berg fired home from 20 yards in the 63rd minute.

"It is down to the players to prove that they are good enough to stay at this club and play for these supporters, come January," the Parkhead boss said.

"We will try to find the right players of the right quality to lift the team and we are working hard behind the scenes to find those players."

Wilson - who has started each of the last four games, which Celtic have failed to win - admitted his own future had crossed his mind.

"He's a new manager and since he has come in, the players haven't set the place alight," Wilson said.

"It's been a pretty disappointing start to the season, to be honest.

"So I think he has got a point, he can only judge the players on what he has seen and it's been poor.

"With a new manager you're always playing for your career but when you start the season quite poorly, especially in the last four weeks, it creeps into your mind."

  2. .McGeady is great to watch. Why septic have that cheating clown in their team is beyond me. He's overweight, overpaid and talentless. He's breathing like he has emphysema within 5 minutes. I only wish septic had more of the same.

  3. Nearly half way through a disastrous season and this clown ( Wilson ) "thinks" he needs to raise his game ?
Does he by this statement admit he has been giving sub standard performances and if so woill he consider giving back some of his undeserved salary. I dont think so he wont have the guts to do that.
Well known saying " talk is cheap " comes to mind .
The players at Celtic Park are far removed from the quality the supporters deserve and expect.
Where do we go from here ?

  4. kevin, i'm not blaming tony for this team, i was just commenting on his comment that the players must "prove that they are good enough" i was mearly pointing out that they are not, i'm behind Tony, we will see in January if that loyalty is misguided, and Mark, you are spot on, I like Caldwell, there is no doubt he is the scapegoat, i've checked the goals against and goals for every season since 2001, the defence are doing as good as they always did, the forwards aren't, Celtic used to win 2-1, 3-1, 4-1 or more and no-one cared about the goal we lost, but now it's highlighted because the garbage up front aren't good enough.

  5. Mogga needed to make the changes before the start of the season....whoever is available in January will be overpriced. Wilson is @#$% as is the rest of the back line.

  6. it's a strange time to be a Celtic supporter. In my 40 years following the club we have always been blessed with an abundance of free scoring truly gifted players and the vast majority of those were local bhoys. Lennox, Johnstone, Murdoch, Auld, Nicholas, McClair, McStay, McAvennie, Walker, the list is endless. As hard as it is to say we now have a team who struggle with the basics of trapping and passing a ball. Scott Macdonald, despite his debut season goal scoring record has a woeful 1st touch and his distribution is as bad. We all know Scott Brown has had his personal issues, but his form does not warrant inclusion in the team week in week out. Shaun Maloney is no where near the player that left us for the EPL, Mark Wilson seriously lacks pace and comes unstuck both defensively and in attack because of this. McManus is fast becoming a liability and his and Loovens bad form has affected the performance of Caldwell who in my opinion is being made the scapegoat. Sure Caldwell makes mistakes, who among us doesn't, but he's scored and created more goals than he's conceded. The local talent is out there. Modern managers hide behind the excuse that they can't buy expensive imports and compete. The guy who scored for Hamburg last night cost them €10m. He was a decent player but come on, he wasn't near the class of Larsson or Bergkamp. Last night we were nervous and lacked composure on the ball, passing and crossing was woeful and the running off the ball lacked direction or purpose. The core basics of a good footballing side. Stop hiding behind lack of transfer funds and start giving good skilful players such as McCourt, McGinn and Caddis a run out, and for gods sake, bring back Darren O'Dea!!!!

  10. They were not as bad last season or the one before that! Its the same players that were playing last night except n'guemo who mowbray bought. How come strachan could motivate them but mowbray cant. Its because he does nt see fault with them and insists that they put in a good performance, we hear this every week now. Hes trying to be a father figuire to them and not a boss. Strachan or martin oneill would have tore strips off of them for some of their performances this season. The first half performace against tel aviv comes to mind, should nt he have been in at half time tearing into them for playing so poorly and demanded better. That is what it takes to command the dressing room you can see that he has lost the dressing room already. If you take no @#$% the team will work harder for you. If you try to be their pal they will take the c**t out of you!

  11. Guys, get a reality check here Mowbray inherited this team and he stated that he would give everyone a chance....he will sell and buy in Jan. Furthermore 2 of his signing are injured so how can they be judged. Give the guy time. Out of the 200/3/4 squad there is only one player left Maloney, Starchan squad was not good enough with players going stale. Mowbray will build his own team however it does not happen in 12 games. Also "penny pinching" just look at the farce at IPOX and then think about our boards penny pinching. The goal scorer last night cost £12 million btw!!!!

  12. I dont know if anyone noticed right about the 68th minute when the ball was played through to one of the hamburg players mcmanus missed the header to clear it as he normally does then pretended he was injured went off the park limping they where about to bring on loovens but mcmanus made a full recovery the guy is absolutely rank he knew he blew it went down knowing we were losing wasting time he must go in january as for mark wilsons comments the guy is a dunfermline player at best time for a major clearence starting with the penny pinching board

  13. inverkenny - so who is tony meant to play, judge him on his own siginings when he gets the chance theres not alot we can do just now, we must knuclke down and get on with it

altho am goin to question tony's man management skills,if you look at what martin o'neill did - i know every manager is diff but he gave average players self belif that they could win a game,if u look at petta, agathe, petrov, mcnamara, sutton and many more he gave them that self belif, surley tony and the coaching staff can do the same but that will take alot of hard work in training

and dont expect class players coming to scotland,u kept banging on about the players weve bought over the last 10-12 years, those days are long gone for the old firm,we cant compete with other leauges.yes the old frim have the fan power and are backed all the way but thats it,we cant compete wit teams wages they can offer.if the old firm are looking at a player their agent will say to clubs down south and 9 times out of 10 they go else were because they offer bigger wages.old firm only get a handful of gem siginings now ie - boruc, naka, cuellar, boughera and miby gravessen (he was a gd player for everton - couldnt hack it up here)

so must grit our teeth and get on with it,yes its not good enough but the fact is thats the way its goin to be from now on c'mon the hoops

From Kevin, on Fri 23 Oct 10:01AM
  14. tony, they have proved they are not good enough, how many chances are you going to give them, this team are finished, the fans know that, but you dont, did you see all the empty seats, the fans aren't stupid, they are not going to pay to watch non football, can anyone name a footballer at Celtic, Nakamura is gone, and Wilson should shut his mouth, same goes for McGeady, when you do your talking in the media and not on the park it's a sure sign of a failure.
