India's left-arm bowler Zaheer Khan dismissed Owais Shah for 72 and fast bowler Ishant Sharma sent back Andrew Flintoff for 41 in successive overs in the final powerplay to derail

England's spectacular chase of a revised target of 198. The pair had put on 82 off just 48 balls for the fourth wicket after a slow start by the tourists.

Put in to bat in overcast conditions, India made 166 for four in the allotted 22 overs after the innings was twice interrupted by rain.

Aggressive opener Virender Sehwag lashed his second successive half century (69) and shared in a 79-run second-wicket stand with Gautam Gambhir (40) to give India a solid start.

England, looking to turn around a poor run of form, lost openers Ravi Bopara (1) and Ian Bell (12) plus skipper Kevin Pietersen (5) by the ninth over with the total on 52.

But Shah, who hit his second fifty of the series, and Flintoff staged a remarkable fightback with a calculated assault, especially on the spinners.

The pair turned on the heat when England needed 110 off the last 10 overs and 63 from the last five overs, with two overs of the final powerplay still remaining.

The experienced Zaheer dismissed Shah, caught by Sachin Tendulkar at point, and in the next over Sharma's slower delivery outfoxed Flintoff who was caught by Zaheer at extra cover to apply the brakes on the tourists.

Zaheer, who bowled consistently well, dismissed Samit Patel (11) to trigger England's lower order collapse.

India put on 60 in the last five overs after the second stoppage thanks to Yuvraj Singh's 11-ball 25 with three sixes.

Sachin Tendulkar fell early to Stuart Broad for 11 but man of the match Sehwag took control, playing breathtaking drives and pulls as he lashed nine fours and three sixes in his 57-ball knock.

Sehwag and Gambhir were dismissed by off-spinner Graeme Swann caught by James Anderson in the deep looking for quick runs.

The fifth one-dayer will be played at Cuttack on Wednesday.

  1. Comment #6 Sundervanjani, you may want to see the response of junktempp77. Thye Duckworth Lewis system is confusing especially when you don't know the formulae used to calculate the targets. I don't. However like junktempp77 says a target larger than the score made by the team batting first is based on the fact the team batting first would have been pacing themselves for a 50 over match. Team 2 knows they are only batting for 22 overs so they can start slogging from the first over - like they are playing a 20/20 match. Hence they are given a target which would have been challenging.
Hope this helps. I still do not know how the target is calculated bu I hope to find out someday.

  2. British should feel what Indians did after loosing in the world hockey.Today England who tought the world, how to play cricket are getting humiliated by Indian cricket team not because they are very good but because you have stopped to improve your skills.England is using 50 years old approach where as the ever evolveing face of cricket is more like mortal combat.Wake Up England it is not the cricket your forefathers taught the world,It is the survival of the fittest

  3. D/L method in cricket really,The committee who made, also must not being Knowing what type of rule they have made. How can a team has to make more runs than first batting side, while batting second. Suppose First batting side made 120 runs in their 36 overs and rain interupted.now second batting side has to make 150 runs in 30-32 overs alloted to them. Runs more And Over Less. Really this type only the Great Rotten mind committe members can understand.

  5. @Grainge: The D/L rules and formulae are a little too complicated to explain. But here's the logic, more or less. When India came out to bat, they didnt know that the match would be curtailed to 22 overs. They had a strategy of making their 10 wickets last for the full 50 overs. But when England held the bat, they knew exactly how many overs their 10 wickets had to last for. Hence the need for making more runs than India did.

In other words, the target that England are given is a calculated guess of "What target would India have possibly set, had they known from the very beginning that the match would only be for 22 overs each?" Hope this clarifies things a bit for you

  6. I hope this calms down the British media. England are not as good as they think they are. Especially on the continent. Playing there is a tough assignment for anybody.

    Well done India.

  7. This match brought out he best in Shah and Flintoff, they were brilliant and for once in the series India were getting very agitated, however, the total was massive in the allotted 22 overs by the DL rules. Can someone please explain these rules? How can england have to score more runs than India in the same overs in worse conditions.
the aggression came too late. You guys can do it so keep up that aggresion. We played England. How come that the umpire did not refer the run out when India batted he was not given when he was run out, was there an appeal for it?
