Kohl handed maximum ban

Eurosport - Mon, 24 Nov 14:59:00 2008

Bernhard Kohl has been handed a maximum two-year doping ban by the Austrian Anti-Doping Agency after refusing to name the people who helped him cheat during the Tour de France.

CYCLING 2008 Gerolsteiner Kohl - 0

The 25-year-old Austrian tested positive for the new generation of erythropoietin, CERA, in retroactive tests carried out on samples provided during this year's Tour.

"He was asked where he got the substance and who helped him but would not give any answers," Austrian NADA chairman Andreas Schwab said after confirming the length of Kohl's ban.

The Austrian rider was the best-placed climber on this year's Tour de France and finished the race third overall.

The Austrian Press Agency reported that he was considering an appeal against the ban.

Kohl was supposed to join the Silence Lotto team from Gerolsteiner during the close season but the contract was declared void after the tests came to light.

  1. hit the nail on the head SteveH. presently, the bans for cheats are feeble, and the people making or dealing the stuff seem to get no punishment at all. Make the ban long enough to really hurt a rider, like 8 to 10 years. 2 years is nothing really. I pretty much gave up competitive cycling in 2004, 5 years later in 2009, i expect to be back near the same level. I doubt i could do it with 10 years off, and probably wouldnt want to.

kill off the supply chain and make the bans long enough to have an impact on the cheats lifestyle.

  2. So, what about this for a theory? Old King (of the Mountains) Kohl didn't grass on his suppliers because he was probably paid by his them to keep his mouth shut. How much guvnnor? Of, about 2 years wages would cover it, I guess? I've an 8year old lad who adores cycling. I don't want criminals like this in the game to influence him. Lifetime ban!

  3. So it seems I am alone in thinking that he did right not to name the other people involved... Anyway, I think most cyclists are doped, so it annoys me to see everyone lashing out at Kohl. What astonishes me is that you keep thinking that the ones who are caught are the only guilty: do you folks also believe in father Christmas? Each time one of these guys is caught, one learns that he's been doing it for years. So if he was doing it for years without being caught, I guess it indicates quite conclusively that there are a big bunch of cheaters out there. At any rate, the solution is not to point fingers at Kohl, but to just stop watching cycling and turn to sports where doping is less prevalent, like curling or darts.

  4. The most hypocritical statement of the year award goes to Kohl.

It's bewildering that he thinks cooperating means stopping short of revealing those involved in his case. At the same time, it's funny to think that appears to be avoiding doing so in order to retain some "credibility" amongst cyclists by not snitching. It's a sad reflection of cycling that he feels this is the preferable option for when he eventually gets back into the sport.

  5. On Eurosport UK's News bulletin on the TV, it says that he admitted carrying on taking CERA even AFTER he know about the positive test from the TdF. Apparently he was 'disappointed' about the length of the ban. What an idiot - as many have said, it's time to seriously look at lifetime bans.

  6. He is so irrelevant I actually spelled his name wrong I guess it is Kohl and his manager Hans Holczer.

  7. If you read the article a couple of days ago from Euro where Cole actually mentions discussing taking CERA with his manager. I beleive that should be thoroughly investigated as well. Any legitimate Team would have suspended him right away just for having such discussions not to mention the sponsors who put butt on the line and end up losing big time for these devious act's. I'm sure the sponsors should be interested in that conversation.

  8. IMO it`s very simple....BAN FOR LIFE

  9. Ban these cheats for good, 2 years is simply not enough. Their licence should never be renewed & clubs should wash their hands of them - when are you people going to learn, you disgrace your team, your country & yourself, really the lowest of the low. You do not deserve a second chance or a third.....................

  10. Big BOB - that is a good Idea butt little scum bags like Kohl would try to point finger at people who had nothing to do with their offense to just get back in the peleton. This homely little cheat obviously did not learn his lesson. I'll go one step further Bob this guy should never be let back in the peleton. What is this @#$% now he want's to appeal after admitting that he doped are these guy's living in reality or is he dreaming he will win on appeal. He should get 2 more years for wasting everyone's time on appeal.

  11. Good idea SteveH re. 2 yr ban should only start AFTER divulging their source.
    '
Also, surely the learnings from street drug trafficking could apply to addressing this problem- there's a similar heirarchy going on and the investigative capabilities could reveal more.

  12. Typical spineless response from yet another disgraced dope cheat. It makes me wonder if our sport will ever truly be clean as there are obviously teams of chemists still out there trying to bypass the testing procedures, so who are these people working for - professional teams or determined individuals? These are the probing questions that need answers before our sport is taken seriously again.

From Holty, on Mon 24 Nov 5:50PM
  13. Typical......its as if he's from the old school of riders.....Not spitting in the soup just so it'l make it easier for him if he returns. No balls

From Richard, on Mon 24 Nov 5:23PM
  14. how does he think that by not answering any of the questions regarding the where abouts and sources of the drugs that he will have any chance in an appeal?
He has gone rapidly down in my estimations!
    Shame the Doctors!!

From alastairiha, on Mon 24 Nov 4:23PM
  15. You know? I agree with the concept of no return to the peloton until your doping sources and methods are revealed and investigated and then have your ban start! That would certainly put pressure on riders, knowing they will not start ban until the fess up! Good idea! Cool! :)

From Enid, on Mon 24 Nov 3:16PM
  16. i think it shud stil b 2 years if he coroporates and 4 if he dosnt because 1 year out isnt that long and riders wil just dope nd own up if 1 year bans r given, i do think the doctors shud b caught and also jail sentences shud b given as this will scare the riders

From hamishhore, on Sun 23 Nov 8:37PM
  17. I.M.O. the '2 years' or whatever caught riders are suspended should not even begin to tick until they have told everything they know about who/where/how they were doping.
Obviously most will only tell the minimum and some might lie but if their explanation gets exposed then a life outside cycling could be their reward.
This might even make the 'doctors' who deal in this foul deception think twice as they would know any riders caught would have to point at them or never ride again...
