Champions League - Team news: Babel missing

Ryan Babel joined Fernando Torres in being left behind by Liverpool as they flew out for their crucial Champions League Group E clash at Debrecen.

Dutch forward Babel was substituted just 19 minutes into Saturday's 2-2 draw with Manchester City after twisting his ankle following a collision with Steven Gerrard.

Torres has also stayed at home as expected for treatment on his groin injury in a bid to see him fit for Sunday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Manager Rafael Benitez told the club's website: "We thought it would be two or three weeks and he's only 12 or 13 days into that so there's no point in him going.

"The next few days will decide if he is fit for Everton but at this moment there are no guarantees."

Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who were struggling with injuries at the end of the draw with City, were in Liverpool's 18-man squad that travelled to Budapest.

Glen Johnson, who missed the City game with a calf problem, was also in the party while Albert Riera's hamstring injury meant he was left behind for further treatment. Daniel Agger has recovered from a head injury sustained at the weekend.

The Reds need to win in the Ferenc Puskas Stadium, with Lyon avoiding defeat away to Fiorentina in Group E, for the Anfield club to retain any interest in reaching the group stages.

  3. I'm all for Debrecen, but there's no way in­ hell they're going to win this match. Plus their­ defence is weak, so they can't play for a draw,­ either. The question really is: Are Liverpool strong­ enough to score?
    In all honesty, it's been a­ pleasure for Debrecen to be allowed to show up in the­ Champions League and I'm pretty sure they've­ enjoyed every minute of it and are sorry Torres­ won't be there to score. I know I am.
