Edwin van der Sar's place in the Manchester United goal will be filled by either Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak when the Dutchman retires, manager Alex Ferguson said.
"Ben has terrific ability and needs game experience. Tomasz is also another good keeper," Ferguson said.
"At the end of the day the two of them will fight it out, I'm sure of that."
CSKA Moscow's goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev had been strongly linked with a move to United.
Van der Sar, 39, is due to decide next month whether to carry on playing for another season or bring his career to an end.
The keeper, who has helped United to three Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph during four years at the club, is out of contract at the end of the season.
"Edwin's not said anything yet about what he intends to do," Ferguson said. "He has come back from his recent injury well. It will be Christmas time or sometime in December when he will outline his plans and how long he will go on. We will await that."
Foster or Polish international Kuszczak will feature for United in their penultimate Champions League Group B game against Besiktas on Wednesday as Ferguson, whose side have already qualified for the next phase, fields a young side against the Turkish visitors.
Ireland international Darron Gibson will start in midfield while Gabriel Obertan, who signed from Bordeaux in July, will start his first European game for the club against bottom-placed Besiktas.
"We want to win the group," said Ferguson. "It's a good fixture in that we are already through. It means I can try one or two things. We could easily have an absolute non-event game or it could be the absolute opposite."

HAHAHAHA ALEX FREGUSON THINKS HE KNOWS WHT HES TALKIN ABT WHEN HE VDS LEAVES ALEX WOULD BE RETIRED AND IF HES NOT HE WILL PUT FOSTER AND REGRET IT !!!!!
he wont because he can't Manu will be busted out you guys are bleeding money.....nothing that bleeds money lasts very long....just ask your moms
FERGIE has the answer to united and england problem as a whole
United should buy back Tim Howard. He's blossomed since his time at Everton.
whos prefer sir alex himself to replace van der sar?? i think he suit for that post
haha just save ur stupid comments guys...fergie just want to give both of the subs the confidents they need...im sure in 2 to 3 years ManU will buy Akinfeev.
I reckon if they are gonna sign a keeper they should have ap unt on jaskalinen, hes bored of bolton and quality...must be worth a punt.
Akinfeev better than VDS? Please. Give me VDS any day of the week if we're talking here and now. If we're talking future, obviously it's Akinfeev.
Akinfeev is better than all three. His instincts are much better than those of Kuzchak and Foster, he has grater agility than Edwin VDS. He has a vast experience with Russian national football team and of course winning UEFA Cup with CSKA Moskva. Just buy him.
i dunnoooooooo. foster just pisses me off coz on the england match . he was fantastic. but he dicks about way too much, and i just think its too many points to drop for a team that is challenging for the trophys every year
I do not believe it !!!
Then again I don't believe anything old purple nose says !!
Foster is just not good enough
heres hoping van der saar stops on for another year. coz foster is @#$%.
walter u are a jacko
united are sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeite
sunil_mufc shut up u know nothing spen some 2 make some that is why madrid are top of the la liga and man u are 2nd in league
man united cant afford him
Utd can not make more money then they have in the last 2 seasons, therefor, if that could not reduce the Glazers debt the only other option is to spend less. I am afraid that is the reason Utd are not going to sign anyone, and is why they have obtained the services of so many young players. They are, for good or bad, the future of Utd.
the bubble is going to burst and ferguson know this, over spending now could ruin a club for years.
Foster is good enough to replace VDS, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.
