Rafael Nadal admitted he needs to rediscover his composure when facing crucial points and said he was short of confidence in his bid to claim the season-ending World Tour Finals crown in London.
The Spaniard lost his opening match 6-4 6-4 to Sweden's
World number two Nadal insisted he was not playing badly, but was not at his very best having suffered injury problems in recent months.
"The second half of the year was difficult for me, and probably I lost a little bit of this necessary confidence and calm," he said.
"But I am working really hard to come back at my best level. I think I'm not far away from my best level. But I need a little bit more confidence and more calm.
"This year is going to be extremely hard to finish really well. But I'm going to work very hard to start next year very good. I believe in myself, that I can come back playing really well next year."
Australian Open champion Nadal admitted he was unlikely to overtake Switzerland's
"My level right now is not to be number one," the Mallorcan said.
"My level is to be still fighting and practising hard to be ready as soon as possible to compete another time. Going on the court, with the full confidence in myself against everybody.
"Sport is like this. Sometimes you have some best moments; sometimes you have a little bit worse moments. This probably is one of these moments for me right now. I just accept it and work to improve the situation."
Besides the World Tour Finals - in which he must also face defending champion
"I had a long time outside of competition. I am not feeling tired and I don't want to finish the season," the left-hander said.
"I have this one week, one week of Davis Cup, and after, one month of practice in Mallorca. That's what I have to recover my 100 per cent level to start next year with a good level and chances to win in every place that I play."
Four-times French Open champion Nadal had his 31-match winning streak at Roland Garros broken by Soderling last May, who is the only man ever to beat Nadal at the French Open.
And the Swede repeated the upset with a tidy performance at the former Millennium Dome, at times giving the 23-year-old the run-around on the indoor hard court.
"I didn't play really bad. I played OK," Nadal said.
"But in the important moments, I didn't have this necessary calm. So I had a few mistakes. I played shorter in the important moments.
"If you are not completely calm and playing very well in that moment, it's really difficult to win."
Top 10 newcomer Soderling said he was thrilled to beat Nadal again.
"It feels better to beat the world number two rather than the world number 200. I always enjoy beating good players rather than lower-ranked players," he said.
"I managed to play really well in the important points, which is something I think you have to do if you want to beat the top guys.
"I played a lot of big matches this year, and I played well. I beat a lot of good players. So I'm sure I improved that part of my game."

IM CRYING!!!!!!!!!!!!
No.32 morituri, by 'we' I do mean Nadals fans in general, although I would stop short of calling us a 'brigade', that would be totally O.T.T, so why the aggressive post? I'm showing my support for my favourite player which I am entitled to do, as you do too by referring to 'King Federer'. Nothing wrong with that at all is there? I'm not sure why you have taken exception to my post apart from the fact that I am a Nadal fan.
Yeah...Rafa will destroy them next year!
hee guy cant u see what am seeing about nadal that he is not actually playing is real game. if you will remember what happened in Australian open when nadal beat federer in the final to win the cup, federer cried like baby and say in quote "Oh God This GUY is killing me" Ever since then nadal purposed in his heart that he is not to win any game this year in order to give federer a chance to be the best player of all time. just think about this. give nadal next season and see the real him.
Well, what is happening to nadal now could as well happen to anybody, for those who are against should hold ur peace and let see how next season goes but i belt you is coming with a full force. nadal i pray u come back soon and put this men to shame.
Soderling now have 2 solid matches back to back win against Nadal. No one can take that confidence away from him. Its not easy mentally for Nadal knowing that he is against the person who crushes him on his own turf. Soderling may not able to beat the other top players but he knows he can beat Nadal. Nadal will always have this fear lingering in him . Good Job Soderling.. All the best Nadal on your next match.
No.33 Don't be so positive, what do you mean "we" ? What are you the Nadal Brigade ? Nadal will always be remembered as a great player even he stopped playing now but history always teaches and if you look players have dips and come back or have dips and start fading, it's life. When your main assets is your physical strentght, you are in trouble if you cannot boss your opponents like he used to. However, it won't take away the fact that he's the only player who managed to really rattle legendary King Federer. That in itself has been a great feat.
fork u nadal
No.32 fanrafa don't be so negative!! We need to stay positive!!
the future doesn't look good for Nadal especially on hardcourts, defending AO title seems almost impossible...
no.11,who the hell is talking about Rafa's injuries here? Did Rafa say himself he's injured right now? He's probably talking about his year because the journalists constantly ask about it. Soderling deserved to win it,and Rafa didn't. He also says the same thing. So,people do give Soderling credit, get real.
nice one pk161976 and of course all who blog here are more than welcome will post the dates and address after the davis cup final.
Rafa will not recover completely from his problems. When Fed is not in a condition to be No1 Djokovic and Murray will be the succesors
Here we go again - the same old arguments. At least there aren’t too many insults - yet. I think it’s best to take whatever the press spouts out with a pinch of salt. In Eurosport’s cased, I’m thinking a dose of salts, or at least the results of… if you know what I mean. They ask the same old questions and print the same old answers. I prefer to let the game speak for itself. I’m enjoying this tournament - I think it’s quite open this year. No idea who is going to win, but then if we could predict the future, we’d all be winning the lottery.

Spot on no.20 Bali, maha re: Rafas lack of confidence against Soderling (and before anyone starts, I take NOTHING away from Robin with his win, these matches are there to be won and he did it twice), I think Soderling could definately turn out to be Rafas bogey player. Rafa didn't just lose his title at RG he lost face too and the guy is obviously still scarred by it, give him a break!
Rafa will and should play Davis Cup for Spain and for him. Best of 5 set wins will prepare Rafa to defend upcoming Aussie Open, also will boost his wavering confidence.
After DC, he really needs to work on heavy top spins for effective flat heavy shots if he were to prevail on hard or clay. Vamos !!
May be a little confidence in Nadal's game but I see more of a game strategy against people like Soderling and Del Potro. Unlike Federer and other who struggle with Nadal's top spins, those tall guys receive his top spins exactly where they like and that makes life very difficult for Nadal.
It's hard work for Nadal to beat a Soderling playing 100% on any surface.
listen up everybody. ralph is giving a party ib his new house. sorry 'bout that, ajpbolton...good, sincere post, Jacky.
You're right "LogicSurvives" that Nadal's mental strength surfaced a few times in the last tournament (esp. Almagro!) but it seems it is not 100% there, because I think what happened with Soderling at the French must have shaken him up real bad. Also, his mental strength against non-top-10 players is one thing, but it won't work too well on a more confident player (e.g. Djoko, Davydenko on a good day, and Soderling y/day who had nothing to lose and was confident he had beaten Nadal on CLAY for God's sake!)
