Spurs director to leave for Whitecaps

Tottenham executive director Paul Barber is set to leave the club's board next year to become chief executive at new Major League Soccer franchise Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Canadian-based Whitecaps play in the United Soccer Leagues First Division but are set to join the MLS in 2011, with Barber joining them next year after working on Spurs' shirt and new stadium sponsorship until the end of February.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: "Paul will take up his new position in the spring of 2010. He will remain in his role of executive director progressing our new shirt sponsor and stadium naming rights discussions until the end of February next year.

"After this time, Paul will become a non-executive director, helping to provide a smooth transition."

Levy added: "I should like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for his hard work, dedication and contribution to the growth and success of our commercial operations and for his support for the wider development of our club during his time with us.

"I wish him every success when he takes up his new role in North America."

  3. MLS will get there it's trying to find its feet in a local market where it's the 4th or 5th most significant sport and so is trying to play those sports and franchises at there own game and appeal outside the US at some level. I have watched a few games and always been impressed, they just need to find the right balance between individuality as a sport in the US and commercial attractiveness for the tv networks and sponsers.

That said I will probably get shot for this, but I am all up for cheerleaders in the EPL
